I've always liked Claudia. She's one of the few girls that actually has a sense of humor. I agree with the previous poster who said Claudia was too diffuse with her art...most of the artistic kids I knew in grade school had, by eighth grade, found their main thing and mainly stuck with that.

^ I liked her humor better than Abby's. Maybe it was because of the nasal-effect. But it also seemed that Abby put a little too much effort into it, which just put me off but Claudia just seemed to be genuinely funny.

I think Claudia is the most interesting and funky out of them all, and I find it awesome that she's good at most types of art, but some of her outfits are weird, and I can't even begin to imagine how horrible that blob looked in Kristy and the Baby Parade.
But honestly, she should have had a tutor since elementary school, and the fact she reads all the time, I would have thought it would have improved her spelling right away.
She seemed to be good at math and science at times though and could have improved.

She probably wouldn't have liked to be good enough to compete or to be likened to Janine.

and the fact she reads all the time, I would have thought it would have improved her spelling right away. Me too. She had an advantage over kids that NEVER read for pleasure, so I didn't know why she misspelled the simplest words, like the and two/to/too.

^Again, the caricature of herself. In the early books (see #3) she mis-spells but it's nowhere near the degree of later on.)

I was just thinking that if Claudia's parents hadn't disapproved of junk food, Claudia would have gotten into candy-making. I've dabbled in it somewhat the past month and you can get artistic with certain kinds of candy. It's really fun! I can totally imagine Claudia creating little candy masterpieces. Remember when she made that fancy salad in "Claudia and the Great Search" and her parents thought it was a "celebratory salad for Janine?" I know there's been talk about how the Kishis weren't as against junk food as Claudia perceived them to be. I think that's probably true. No parent really wants their kid to be shoveling in junk all day, but I bet that they would be OK with it in moderation. For whatever reason, Claudia somehow felt the need to be sneaky about the food. Maybe she felt like it would disappoint them. She felt like she was a disappointment to them anyway because of her poor grades and disinterest in school.

I can definitely see Claudia being enthusiastic about candy-making. She had a candy necklace, after all. There was this event at my elementary school every year called the "spring fling" and each classroom had a different activity going on...miniature golf, fish pond, spin art, cupcake-decorating, etc. One of them was for making your own candy necklace. I know I made one that consisted of sweet tarts, but I don't remember how I actually got them on the string.

I think in some ways she's the sitter that's most her actual age. To start with she doesn't have to be a mini adult at home with the cooking responsibilities of say Dawn or Mary Anne or the regular baby sitting Kristy has to do in the early days.
Yes, she wasn't great at school and behind the others in her work.. But for 13 she doesn't really strike me as down right completely dumb. I think she's a bit of a free spirit who in some ways does what she pleases even more than Dawn does, and it doesn't always go down well with her conservative parents.

Great point about the candy, too.

I can definitely picture Claudia getting into candy-making or cake decorating.
With the school thing, I thnk a lot of it has to do with the way they all became caricatures, but plot-wise I think that she just does not have a lot of the foundations because she's never really paid attention in school. Of course, a few of the plots contradict that by making her able to do really well when she wants to, so I don't think it's really possible to get a definite answer.
I didn't have a favourite sitter when I was growing up, but I think Claudia might be now. I love her voice in the books she narrates.

I like Claudia but I don't like her attitude towards school; I know she doesn't like school but I don't like how at times she says that she doesn't need school because she's going to be an artist. Maybe she'll like school when she's older. As for the junk food... I would have liked to see Claudia and Janine bond over hiding junk food in their rooms. Too bad that didn't happen.

I think you have to take into consideration that the rest of the BSC were major overachievers. Claudia's attitude with school wasn't that unusual for a 13 year old but she looked like a lazy bum when she was grouped in with the others. Abby was a bit of a slacker in school too, but for some reason that gets ignored.

I think that Abby generally does well in school, so that's why her being a bit of a slacker gets ignored.

This just occurred to me--if Claudia was so into arts and crafts of all kinds, why did she never do any sort of project involving origami? I mean, it's a Japanese art Maybe she did and I'm just not remembering. Or was it considered too much of a "kid" activity? I would have thought in between mentions of her stringing beads for jewelry and making Western-themed mobiles, origami would have come up a few times...
