I mean, they DO suck, and do not reflect the Claudia art that probably anyone had in mind, but her dad did New Yorker cartoons, not realistic drawings.

They weren't TERRIBLE, IMO, but hardly the work of an artistic genius like Claudia was supposed to be.

Hey, they're a big step up over the flying chef's hat in SS3. Or the flying banana in SS1. Or anything in SS2, which I believe includes a ghost, so that completes the flying theme. Which, you know, is deftly illustrated by squiggly lines.

Was there seriously an illustration of just Karen's manicure? Weird!

What really bugged me is that they were supposed to be the pictures the sitters took, but they were not at all photo-realistic.

Was there seriously an illustration of just Karen's manicure? Weird! Yes! She had these odd looking hands with long, red (I assume) nails. Would they really have put fake nails on a six-year-old? (Oh, and this illustration was the photo-style that greer mentions.) Ok, I will concede that the drawings in NY, NY aren't HORRIBLE.. but they're not what I would expect from a so-called "talented artist" who is praised by an actual talented artist (her art teacher in NY, NY).

What really bugged me is that they were supposed to be the pictures the sitters took, but they were not at all photo-realistic. Considering how horrendous that "photo-like" picture of Stacey and Claudia was in the last chapter of Stacey's Portrait, maybe that's a good thing? She never said she had fake nails, so maybe her nails were just naturally long. On a messy six yr old kid? Yeah right. Also, the polish was supposed to have been light purple, so why did it appear to be so dark in the photo? STUPID. If she DID have false nails, it makes NO SENSE that Kristy hadn't gone looking for her, considering all she was supposed to be doing was getting her earplugs. I used to have acrylic nails professionally done and it took freakin' AGES. I don't know how long it takes for a simple manicure, though.

My eyes! Don't forget her gappy teeth, either.
Some of the 'photos' in the earlier Super Specials were of the most random things. SS#3 has one of Stacey's lunch and one of a candy machine. It's too bad that Ann's father couldn't have drawn some actual cartoons as opposed to sketchy drawings, in 'New York, New York!'. The art in that book was generally okay, if not anything special, but I thought that the 'Chinatown' drawing was pretty bad.

The "art work" in these books is just shameful. How could Ann M. look at these crap illustrations and think, "Oh, yes, this captures my vision exactly. Thanks, Dad!"?

^I remember the Little Sister illustrations always looking half-done -- like, part of the drawing would be in great detail, but the rest was, like, quickly sketched lines. If they were going for some kind of effect, it definitely went over my five-year-old head.

Yeah, I remember Karen's glasses just being 2 circles and a line. No depth at all. It was strange.
In light of these horrible drawings, Angelo Tillery--illustrator of super specials from 4 on except for the Dad-illustrated ny ny--did a pretty good job.
