The girl with the surname of frequently incorrect pronounciation! She will always be Spy-er to me.
Not really a favorite, she seemed self-centred and manipulative. Passive-aggressive. I guess she did have her sweet moments as well and I like the fact that although she seemed shy and sensitive, she never let people push her around.

I always felt that she seemed manipulative and a little bit sneaky. In MA Saves the Day, I was surprised when she told Dawn that the weirdest person in school was this kid in a 3-piece suit. "His hobby is obeying rules." MA gossiping like that. Oooh.
It will always be Spee-er to me *growl* ^^ just kidding
Yet, I always felt that many of them were manipulative. I guess you have to be in order to be a babysitter. You have to manipulate the kids into doing what you want them to do. I dunno.

I didn't really like her in MA Saves the Day. In later books, she doesn't seem to like gossipping or saying bad things about anyone. In the Friends Forever series, where she tells Claudia that Stacey and Jeremy broke up, she starts the conversation by saying "You know I hate to gossip", and Claudia acknowledges that as truth. It's as though Mary Anne's character changed as the series... Though that's not surprising, considering how the series was supposed to be 4 books long, and turned out to be 213 (with the addition of ghostwriters).

She was always Spy-er to me for awhile, but finally I decided that that sounded strange and I gave in to Spee-er.
Mary Anne would probably fall somewhere in the middle of my list of characters--not one of my favorites but not one of the ones I hated. Mary Anne's Bad Luck Mystery is the first BSC book I ever read, and it's probably one of my favorite MA books.

I hated her in Island Adventure. Dawn made an honest mistake. It didn't really warrant - "I wish you would get out of my life forever"

MA has some serious issues. her inner b*tch would come out way too many times for my liking. in the island adventure, in the wicked step sister, in the one where dawn moves again. she and dawn fought quite a lot for a pair of bestfriends

I thought it was Spyer too, until seeing "Spier, which rhymes with cheer", in one of the books (though it would have been more apt to have (Spier, which rhymes with crier")...

Hee. "Spier, Spier, what a crier!" Aww, what a missed opportunity.

hah totally agree about Island Adventure. She got a little crazy sometimes, but she was sweet and she was always very responsible and I liked that

Mary Anne has always been my favorite character. I will agree that she can be snarky and a little b*tchy at times. I think we all can though. She did have issues with Dawn. I've never understood why she was such "best friends" with Dawn. Remember how they were going "this is going to be sooo chilly being step-sisters" and then they got on each other's throats? I've always found that strange. Her devotion to Logan always made me smile. Geni

Aw, they only fought when they first moved in and tried to share a bedroom! They got over it and lived happily together.

I have always loved Mary Anne. I love it when her snarky, bitchy side comes out. It seems so unlike her, but we've all got a bit of a b*tch inside of us, don't we? I will admit that she took her shyness to an extreme at times. I mean, running out on your own surprise party? You don't really have to be an extrovert to enjoy a party that your friends throw for you, do you? It's not like they'd invited a bunch of people that she didn't know. I really liked Dawn and Mary Anne's friendship. I was always so jealous that they were best friends and then became stepsisters, though. I want to know if that has EVER happened in the real world.

I think her snarky, bitchy side is bottled up since the discipline that her dad instilled in her prevents her from releasing out her frustrations whenever she feels like it.

I liked her a lot in Mary Anne Saves The Day. I related to that Mary Anne because I was shy and quiet, but also a nasty gossip. But then Mary Anne morphed into a manipulative crybaby with a wicked temper. The BSC always treated her like a bomb about to go off when really she should have been told to suck it up once and for all. I especially dislike her in Claudia and the Middle School Mystery when she implies that Claudia cheated, then instead of apologizing makes the situation all about her.
In the early books, I would have liked to see more of the developing relationship between Mary Anne and her dad. In Mary Anne Saves The Day, they barely speak, but gradually their relationship improves. I'd rather that have been explored than Mr. Spier's rediscovered love with Sharon. Blech.
Later in the series, after Mary Anne Misses Logan, I think she harbors a bit of a crush on Pete Black. I've always liked that pairing.
