Totally agree with all your additional points, sotypical I always thought that Sharon made a real effort to treat MA just as well as she treated Dawn and maybe even came to think of her as her daughter. That's one reason it made me mad (and confused) when MA got angry with or supsicious of Sharon for being good to her. She really didn't seem to want to be close with a mother figure, even Mimi was more a grandmother figure. Then again, MA is a confusing person sometimes

I agree that I would have liked to see more of a relationship between Mary Anne and Dawn's mother. Looking back at it I noticed that Mary Anne seemed to not want to get close to Dawn's mom and it was a little bit confusing at times. Maybe Mary Anne was subconsciously worried about not replacing her own mother.

^ Agree about MA and her mom. Also someone pointed out that MA might have felt Sharon was taking her dad away. Never thought of that but it makes perfect sense.
Another thought.... Sometimes wonder if some of MA’s exaggerated tendencies (crying over everything and not wanting to be mean at all) are her trying to live up to the stereotype of “sensitive”. I’ve actually seen cases when she can be almost take charge while baby-sitting and in Logan’s stories she seemed to almost deal with him on an “equal” level instead of letting herself be trounced on (if that makes any sense what I’m saying…) Also, blowing up and saying mean things when she gets mad shows that she doesn’t ALWAYS feel bad about hurting others feelings. It just kind of seems like when she lets her guard down, or when the situation requires it, she isn’t the mousy little pushover that she is sometimes made out to be. I actually like the tougher side of MA much better and wish she would show it more (and less of the drama queen who cries over everything and gets in petty fights ;D

^ I agree. I think I would like her if she wasn't a drama queen so much of the time.

Mary Anne is the character that I'm most like. We could honestly be twins. I'm usually very meek and quiet, and I tend to let people walk all over me. Like MA though, it all eventually builds up and I snap and can be quite bitchy. Then I feel bad and cry about it though.

I was just noticing on this board that they spell MA's name Mary-Anne on the MA's Journal section or whatever. I have this weird crazy pet peeve of Mary Anne's name being misspelled. It's not Mary-Anne and it's not Mary Ann and it certainly isn't Mary-Ann. Gaaah. Such a dumb thing to be annoyed about, but even irl, if I see an actual MA spelled differently than our Mary Anne, I'm thinking "what is wrong with the spelling of your name?! It's M-a-r-y A-n-n-e!"
Anyway. Does anyone else think that Mary Anne really is totally adorable? It seems like she almost ALWAYS looks cute on the covers. She's super cute so I don't know why they're always calling her plain.

^ Agree that she is definitely the cutest on a lot of the covers and usually seems adorable. I'm not sure either why they call her plain. Kristy either. Don't see why they make such a big deal about Dawn, Stacey and Claud's "stunning" looks when the other girls seem just as pretty. But I guess to me, a lot of beauty comes from the inside and shines through on the outside ;D

I agree that Mary Anne is usually the best looking one on the covers. She almost always looks good. Can't say the same for the other girls! I really like Mary Anne, she's my second favorite of the girls.

I loved Mary Anne's covers (mostly pre-haircut), I thought she looked sooo grown-up and pretty.

I've always been the freakishly shy, quiet girl, but when someone gets on my nerves... Well, anyway, I've noticed that many people think that Mary Anne overreacted when she ran from her birthday party, but I have to disagree. If someone through me a party with a bunch of people as a surprise, I would be incredibly embarrassed. I'm not very good when it comes to social gatherings, and if all of the attention was on me, I'm sure I would react the exact same way that Mary Anne did. Then when I was alone, I would feel horrible and even more embarrassed about running out on the party and ruining the hard work of my friends, just as Mary Anne felt. Random Shy Girl

^ Even though I personally wouldn't have done it (am more of a Kristy ;D), I can understand why MA got upset. I know some people just don't like being the center of attention. Sometimes I wonder if this has to do with self confidence, too, because I know when I am more confident I tend to like being in the spotlight but when lack self assurance, I want to disappear into the crowd and don't want anyone noticing me. Maybe has to do with feeling more self-conscious. But that's just me and might not be MA at all.

Does anyone else think that Mary Anne's face and Ann Martin's have an uncanny resemblance, or is it just me? I think the book cover in which this seemed most obvious to me was on Kristy's Great Idea (the newer illustration). Was it only a coincidence, or did the illustrator purposely make Mary Anne look like the author since she was supposedly so much like her? (and who else thinks that Mary Anne looks way too old on that cover- like a full-fledged adult trying to dress like a young schoolgirl instead of actually looking like one? Well, actually, on the newer cover they all look about 30 instead of 12 )

IMO, none of the girls ever look thirteen on Hodges's covers...and the kids always look like deformed gnomes.
