I have this theory that either TPTB at Scholastic or AMM herself were deathly afraid of being accused of racial stereotyping, so they avoided giving Jessi a personality altogether.

Wasn't Jessi supposed to be funny? When she was introduced she seemed like she was going to be this wise-cracking joke teller. Then her introductory book was about learning sign language (oh, the humor in that topic) and that set the tone for her blandness.

She was. In the beginning she did tell a lot of jokes and was supposed to have a great sense of humor.

I miss early Jessi. I've been reading the series in order, and I don't remember Jessi even showing up in some books.

I loved reading the books about Jessi, but she was never really my favorite character. Her home life seemed interesting.

I like Jessi. Her ballet books are the ones that I like best. One thing that bothered me about Jessi was she went overboard with racism. I didn't like how she wondered if Mallory might be racist just because she was initially quiet at her grandmother's house in super special 14. I mean, really?

Why should the thought not be allowed to cross her mind? They're both still just kids, Mallory had never met her extended family, etc. It's natural for some insecurity to creep in at a moment like that...on both their parts.

^ With super special 14, I think it's because Mallory already knew that Jessi's extended family wasn't going to be Caucasian, even if she didn't meet them.

Of course, but my question is, what really is wrong with Jessi asking herself if her friend feels uncomfortable in her grandparents' African-themed house? So many people think that Jessi goes over the top making everything about race; I don't get that at all. She doesn't want to feel that way about Mal, but the previous experience with another girl filled her with those doubts. And that's not Jessi's fault.

I read through this thread last night and meant to post to say thank you Sparklymouse. Your comments on the very first page were hysterical.

^Wow, that was over 4 years ago! I don't even remember writing that. For the record I still feel the same way about her.

^ Me, too. . Pass on the punching part but I admit to loving when Kristy commented (I don't remember what book but think it was a later one) how boring watching ballet was. I wonder if Kristy was secretly thinking how boring it was to always being dragged to a recital? I think if anything that comment, loudly said, Jessi was not mature enough to be a Sitter let alone head of a household (Chief Resident Sitter) when her parents were gone.

I know right? Jessi should have just shut her mouth instead of jumping to conclusions about her aunt. Her aunt didn't seem too strict, just overprotective.
