Does this ship have a name? It totally needs a name!
Someone mentioned on the BSC LJ community (or was it in here? one of the two places) that there doesn't seem to be much action on the Ben part. There is, though, I think! He takes her to dances. And he waits for her while she's in detention in "Mallory Hates Boys (And Gym)". And they have their adorable lovers' spat in "Here Come the Bridesmaids".
What does everyone else think of this pairing? They seem more realistic than Jessi/Quint, at least...

I think he is just a decent "boyfriend" that doesn't get involved in alot of drama like Logan/MA, thus he's not that interesting.

They really never seemed like boyfriend/girlfriend to me (which is entirely acceptable, considering they were eleven years old)
That's another point. Why couldn't the BSC ever have close male friends that they weren't romantically interested in? I know that's not entirely realistic for tweens, but those books were trying to be 'new age' and not adhere strictly to stereotypes (besides, if they were going for realism, they'd already failed miserably)
Mal and Ben never did anything "physical" IIRC... maybe there was hand-holding. But that's it. And word, to jenlovesmorelli - they were MUCH more realistic than Quint and Jessi (that was one of the lamest couples in the series). It also seemed much more likely that nerdy Ben was interested in dorky Mallory than "cool" Toby in Sea City Here We Come. Ugh! Lame! Mallory was a sturdy "spaz girl" with bushy red hair, huge glasses and no sparkly sweaters. I hardly think 15 yr old Toby, who dumped beautiful NYC-girl Stacey, would be interested in the oldest Pike kid. Unless he was a perve and looking for someone young and dumb to manipulate in order to get into her pants. But that sorta thing doesn't happen in BSC Land.

Yeah, Toby being interested in Mallory seemed really bizarre. Loved the outfit she put together for the date, though The *badges*! I was just rereading "Here Come the Bridesmaids", and in one of the Mallory chapters, she's talking about how he's her sort-of boyfriend. They don't actually call each other boyfriend and girlfriend, but they go to dances together and spend time together. Which is a far cry from: "But first, he said, in his normal voice, "there's something I meant to do before. Can I do it now?" He looked into my eyes.
I felt a little shiver. Quint is the first boy I ever kissed, so it seemed right for him to kiss me one last time now. "Sure," I said. I closed my eyes and leaned toward him.

^ Wha...?
Was that from Here Come the Bridesmaids as well? I never read that one and can't find it ANYWHERE. I remember the first scene where Quint and Jessi kissed and thought that was passionate! FFS, these kids are eleven. In Australia, they'd still be in primary school.

Oh, sorry, the bit I quoted was from Jessi and the Jewel Thieves. At the end of it, after Jessi has the Talk with Quint (saying she's too young for a long distance, steady relationship), but he wants one last kiss.

I don't think Ben and Mal ever kissed... Or at least, if they did, it wasn't mentioned in the books.

Ah okay, I haven't read Jessi & the Jewel Thieves (although, from all accounts, it doesn't sound like I'm missing much) ... I'm glad Quint was written out of the series. The Jessi/Quint relationship was stupid and unrealistic. Yeah, that was in New York, New York. I will never forget the scene - Quint tipped my chin and kissed me gently. My first kiss. "We'll stay in touch, right?" Quint asked. "We better" I whispered" - okay it's probably not exact, but you get the drift. So dumb. These two are KIDS. I don't ever remember Mallory and Ben kissing either.

Haha, I think you almost got that word for word!
Is there any Jessi/Quint fanfic out there? I think it'd be a hilarious. Oh! Oh! Imagine a fic that depicts two relationships and compares/constrasts them... Jessi/Quint and Ben/Mallory. That'd be hilarious.

Yeah but you know how kids pick up ideas from movies, books, etc., how relationships are romanticized and stuff. She was just role-playing because that is what she thinks they are supposed to do when they are in "love."

They really never seemed like boyfriend/girlfriend to me (which is entirely acceptable, considering they were eleven years old) Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have wanted to say this same thing but hesitated because I thought I might be the only one. I think kids need to see that it is okay to not have a boyfriend/girlfriend so that they don't just do it because "everyone else does." Peer pressure is so strong and one thing leads to another... quote author=macca board=sitters thread=1139815323 post=1139825987] That's another point. Why couldn't the BSC ever have close male friends that they weren't romantically interested in? I know that's not entirely realistic for tweens, but those books were trying to be 'new age' and not adhere strictly to stereotypes (besides, if they were going for realism, they'd already failed miserably) When I was a "tween," I didn't have a romantic interest (did have a few crushes on older boys that I knew nothing would ever, ever come from) but I did have a lot of male friends. Several of my friends were the same way. I think books need to show kids that there isn't just one "norm" and that it is okay to be different from what is "expected". Just my thoughts on the subject.

How about the kids that sat at their tables - Rick Chow, Pete Black, etc. Sure they went to dances with them but wasn't there no romantic chemistry involved?

^But Rick Chow/Pete Black etc just seemed like classmates, aquaintances maybe, but not really friends. Plus they didn't really feature very much in the later books and even when they did, they were just secondary characters. Ben and Mallory seemed closer than the girls seemed to Pete Black etc, even though they really weren't romantically involved.
