Oh, I hope that's all it is. But I'm not convinced! ;D Oh, I'm never convinced by what I post on the boards. I just post for the sake of posting, regardless of what it is. I just like throwing out ideas, that's all. But yeah, I've got to read more books that involves Ben and Mal. From what I've read, Ben seems like a secondary character also, but their relationship, to me, seems much more realistic than the Quint/Jessi. So ditto on that point. Quint seems to me like someone who knows how to "get girls." He has the right moves, and I guess the lifting-the-chin worked on Jessi.

Well, considering Quint's favorite hobby, he'd be likely to meet more girls than boys! So maybe he knows a thing or two about them ;D ... when the guys who hassled Quint grow up a little, they might find that Sissy Boy had the right idea.

Quint seems pretty set on Jessi, though! You can tell how much he likes her in "Jessi's Big Break".

I like Mallory and Ben. Their relationship is really innocent and it's fitting for their age. Mal never quite seems to be completely comfortable around him and i like that. Then again I've only read up to the 60s so maybe it changes.

oh, hey, is there ever any explanation given for the Hobbart's moving to Stoneybrook? Like, coming from Australia, why on earth would you move to Stoneybrook? How would you know about some small town in CT?

I can't remember the reasoning, unfortunately. I think they initially moved in Kristy and the Secret of Susan (correct me if I'm wrong!) so maybe it was explained there?
I always thought it was funny when they described the Hobarts accent, for instance in Here Come The Bridesmaids, apparently Mr Hobart says "Roit Heah" instead of "Right Here". Wow, that is one STRONG Aussie accent! Ha! I can't believe we sound like that to Americans!

I don't really like how they ALWAYS have to write out accents phonetically. It doesn't exactly look good on paper, and then there's the dumbness of whoever's narrating "translating" for us, like we can't figure it out. Plus, you can't possibly get as lame as Jessi's "Madamoiselle Romsey? Oh, Ramsey! That's me!" WTF? Do you know someone named Romsey? Does Mme Noelle not speak to you all the time in the class you take twice a week?

Imagine if they did that for all of Logan's lines, him having an accent from Kentucky and all. Man, that would get annoying.

Whenever I read out the Hobarts' accents, they sound really stupid and un-Australian. Then I tried to put on an American accent and saying it the way it's spelled... Duno if it was any better. Maybe the way an American would pronounce "roit" really is the way that a normal, Australian-accented "right" would sound. Am I making sense?

I was a total Mallory/Ben shipper as a kid. Mallory was my favorite sitter and I just knew that Ben was hot. I obviously did not own a copy of Here Comes The Bridesmaids.
Agreed. Mallory/Ben is one of the more realistic pairings in the series. They have a sort-of relationship that actual eleven year olds would have - they go to dances, the library, and occasional movies. They fall somewhere between friends and boyfriend/girlfriend and never move any closer to the latter because it's too far out of their comfort zone. There's a realistic awkwardness to their relationship and it's suitable to their age.
I love how in Get Well Soon, Mallory, Mallory is nearly in tears as she attempts to convince Mrs. Pike that she and Ben have never kissed. And Mrs. Pike is just like, "uh-huh, yes. I believe you. Whatever." Weird, nerdy Mallory would be so insistent that she'd never kissed a boy. Ben should hang around a few more years. Mallory won't be a prude forever.

I get the giggles just thinking about the big fight they had about how to use the library card catalog (I don't remember what book it's in, though--but I do recall thinking Mallory's way made more sense!) I even wrote a story where an argument takes place as two people are using the card catalog, and in my mind it's a secret homage. I love that. So delightfully dorky, and so possibly something that would happen to me.
Of course, it also makes me a little nostalgic for the days of non-computerized card catalogs, efficient as the new ones are. That's one of those things that already makes me feel old--I remember my mom showing me how to use the card catalog when I was about six and thinking it was just so cool--all the little drawers, and the itty-bitty pencils!

The way the paper catalogues smelled was my favorite part.

They're the one that doesn't give a really false expectation of early dating for the readers.
