I hate name smushing too. Everytime I talk to my 12-year-old niece she's always going on about Zanessa, whoever the hell that is.

I know who Zanessa is! Why do I know that? It's those kids from High School Musical. I shouldn't have that knowledge in my head.

^Me too...unfortunately!
I really like Mallory and Ben. They seemed so innocent and very much like my view of 11 year olds (most of the kids at my middle school in sixth grade that were dating, were more like Logan/Mary Anne with all the kissing). I was awkward like Mallory when I was 11, and wasn't at a level of comfort with myself to be having boyfriends. I am glad they made Ben be patient with her (like waiting for her after her detention) and not make them kiss. They were so cute together! Plus, they fought over the silliest things, which is probably something 11 year olds do.
It is also weird to think of them as 11 year olds. I babysat two 11 year olds last night and I cannot imagine them having girlfriends.

Maybe it was a product of being in an elementary school instead of a middle school, but there was no dating going on in my sixth grade (1993-94 school year!) Now, there were plenty of crushes, but no one said they were going out with someone else. That showed up as soon as we hit the junior high in seventh grade!

^Thats good, I think! Unfortunately dating showed up in my fifth grade!!! Now when I look back at how young we were (I was barely 10 when I started), I can hardly believe it!

^Yeah but back then it was like "we're going out" and you said you were, and maybe you talked on the playground, but it was mostly in words, not action.

The sad thing is Penny Lane, the ones in my fifth grade class actually went to the movies with their "boyfriends/girlfriends".

The boy I mentioned in a different thread (Middle school boys, I think) was the first actual boyfriend- far from my first crush- that I had, in mid-8th grade. Our "dates" typically were watching Flyers games at my house. Since we went to different schools, it was a kind of a weird dynamic. (Our families went to the same church; his family and my parents still do. I live halfway across the country and have joined a more conservative church!)

Well, this kid with a rat tail invited me to see teenage mutant ninja turtles III when I was in 5th grade, but I declined; mostly because of the rat tail. Is it really dating though, if you have to ask your parents to drive you somewhere?

If it isn't, then no one in NJ is ever dating before they're 17 (or one of the two is 17)!

What sport is the Flyers?
I don't know. I went to a K-8 program, and I don't remember anyone actually "dating" until about 8th grade. And even then it was mostly that they would walk around the parking lot together at recess. There were rumors, and as I mentioned before the "will you go out with me, check yes or no" but not actually doing anything.

Flyers are the Philadelphia NHL team. They perpetually fizzle mid-season...they haven't had a Stanley cup in 30 years.

Well, I had a boyfriend when I was 15 and he was 15, and sometimes we asked my parents to drive us to each others house or to the skating rink or to the movies; but while I say he was my boyfriend and we definitely fooled around it wasn't dating in the traditional sense because of the fact that we couldn't just go over to each other's house or out to dinner or anything. Not to mention the fact that parents are clearly financing any sort of dating before 16 or so. It's just weird to me.
Maybe it's because I'm so old now.

Oh, see I watch the Red Wings, but I seem to only remember the teams they play in the finals.
