;D Still, it reminds me what a weird couple they were that they had a huge fight over a library card catalogue... What book is that fight in?

I think it was in Stacey's Ex-Best Friend.

OKay, thanks, I only have read about a quarter of the books, although someday I'll like to read them all.

I think Ann was mean to Mal because Mal was probably most like Ann so therefore Ann disliked her. How is that for a convaluted sentence?

haha this whole thing had me laughing. Mallory is such a nerd, poor thing. Although as a kid I had white tights with red hearts on them, just like Mallory, and they were super cute! Well, I did, too, but not when I was eleven. I had them when I was about seven. You probably were younger than Mal when you wore yours, too. I actually had three pairs that were identical, except that one had red hearts, one had pink hearts, and one had baby blue hearts.

^That is true. I don't imagine I wore them in sixth grade. I always thought that Mary Anne was most like Ann, but Mallory actually does make more sense since she is the one who likes to write and all.

I don't know if Ann made Mal so unfortunate because Mal reminded her of herself...that's a little weird. At least, it'd be sad. I mean, not that it couldn't be the case, but if I was writing books for children and giving characters my own traits, I don't know if I would write "Mal has so much goodness in her that after awhile she begins to look pretty" and be thinking of how it relates to me. But who knows - maybe she did. It's just why not instead elevate them in some way; it's fiction. And Mary Anne and Mal have their positive/desirable qualities...they're smart, talented, have boyfriends, etc.
I always thought the similarities with MA and Mal were pretty evenly matched.
Ann/MA: quiet shy sensitive bookish
Ann/Mal: bookish writer braces oldest in family

^I don't know if "oldest in family" applies to both of them in the same way, though; Mallory's character definitely got a worse deal because of it than AMM.

When I was 11 a couple of my friends (We had a little BSC book club going on, we were all huge fans) told me I was like Mallory- into writing, horses, and had braces. I took it as a huge insult. Then the next year I had to get glasses. When I look back at pictures of my nerdy self back then, it kind of disturbs me that with some red curly hair I would have made the perfect Mallory

One that I just found totally random was in a mystery I read not long ago (I can't remember which one), when Mrs. Pike calls the BSC to tell Mal to borrow the Kishis' toilet plunger because Claire flushed doll shoes down the toilet or something. Granted, you could stick a toilet plunger in a bag, but even if you're not eleven (eternally), parading around town with a toilet plunger kind of sucks, and I always thought the Pike house was about a ten-minute walk from the Kishis' anyway. Surely it would make more sense to send one of the older kids whose at home to one of the actual neighbors rather than carrying a toilet plunger around that much! Even Mrs. Pike hates Mallory! Why have I not read this? Does anyone know what one it is? It sounds classic.

Don't forget the "Pike Plague" in #31 Dawn's Wicked Stepsister. Poor Mal not only catches chicken pox for a second time, but she's also left with scars in "unmentionable places".

But what are the chances of getting chicken pox twice?
