I think they're REALLY small. Once you get chicken pox you're supposed to be immune, aren't you? And I don't even want to know where Mallory's scars were.

I had chicken pox twice, but the first case was really mild (like, I had only about 8. . .poxes? itchy things), and my pediatrician said I hadn't gotten enough into my system to become immune. I knew someone who had it three times, though, but she had some immune system problem I think (we were friends in elementary school, so I don't remember the details). So it's possible, but yeah, relatively rare.
I'm poking through my pile of recently-acquired books to try to find the one with the toilet plunger. It's more fun than reading about strategic planning and board governance of museums, anyway.

I'm rereading Baby-sitters Summer Vacation, and in one of Dawn's diary entries, she writes "[Heather--a camper] reminds me of Mallory. But in a good way." Hee! Not even the baby-sitters like Mal!

In Stacey's Emergency, she actually says something almost nice about Mal. Stacey, of all people! I had to read the paragraph again because I almost didn't believe it. "Mal is not feeling to pretty at the moment. She's got wavy red hair (her hair and face are pretty), but she's also got glasses and braces."

I never liked the anti-glasses thing in the BSC books. I think it would have been much better if instead of whining for contacts, Mallory could have whined for a more sophisticated stylish pair of glasses to replace her god awful massive round ones that cover her whole face. I wear glasses and have worn them since I was 10 and I used to hate it when they'd make comments about how Mal could be pretty but she wears glasses... way to go with self confidence for your readers Ann...

^That bothered me too. I'm surprised Claudia never wore fake glasses for style you know? They could've given Mal some cute glasses! When I was young I always thought glasses were super cool and wished for poor vision so I could get some! lol.

Mary Anne does this in her Portrait Collection book -- she intentionally fails a vision test because she wants glasses. Of course, once she sees herself in glasses she thinks they look terrible, so I guess they undid any boosting of glasses-wearing readers' self-esteem with that. Then again, Karen Brewer loves her two pairs of glasses. I think it says something that we visually impaired BSC fans are left to identify with Karen and Mallory

Mary Anne was still wearing reading glasses in the early BSC books...did she keep up the "I need glasses" charade for that long, or did she actually end up needing reading glasses?

I believe in her portrait collection it said she needed reading glasses.

While I agree that Ann should have had been more pro-glasses, I think it's pretty realistic for Mal to want contacts.

Does Mary Anne ever get contacts? I SWEAR I remember reading that she did somewhere. Or did I imagine that?

Today I learnt that the name Mallory comes from an old French word meaning "Ill-fated".
