^Oh yeah, definitely. Claudia really had self-esteem issues. I never picked up on that as a kid but re-reading now, they're all over the place. She pretty much needs constant validation.

I think that Claudia is probably the most insecure of everyone in the BSC.

^ Totally agree. I think that's one big reason for her problems in school and her jealousy of Janine.

^I was thinking of that exact scene, greer. Classic. And Stacey wouldn't be inventing boyfriends for her if she was secure.

Having such spectacularly indifferent parents couldn't have helped Claudia's self-esteem. Ann must have liked Mallory considering how she talks about sharing things in common with her in letters and all. That's not to say that the ghostwriters couldn't have reacted differently to the characters.

^ Agree about Claudia and Ann liking Mal. I think she was mostly trying to create a character people could relate to and I think lots of girls can relate to Mallory and all of her troubles.

Actually, now I think we should call this thread 'Ann hates Claud'. Think of it this way, apart from the obvious family issues, and the blatant school issues, Claud also lost Mimi, broke her leg, got sent back to seventh grade, and had to dress in fruit, veges, animals... etc.

I liked how Stacey seemed to stick up for Mallory -- in one book, Stacey runs up to Mal in the hallway at school and gets mad at some of the kids who are teasing Mallory. Plus, I liked that Stacey and Mallory had their own system for letting the other know if they planned to walk to school together. I think Mallory really looked up to Stacey, and Stacey was really nice about it. Dawn was the one who was a b*tch.

^ I agree. I think Stacey could be a really good friend when she wasn't too busy being "cool." ;D She was a good friend in many situations, though, to both Mal and Jessi and I always enjoyed her relationship with them. Agree about Dawn, too. ;D

^ Hahah, oh dear. As sad as that would've been, it would've been amusing to read about that.
I feel bad for Mal because they wanted to get rid of her fairly early on in the series, I think around the 30s. If that's true, then they kept her around for almost 100 books! If they had had to wait that long before they finally got rid of her, no wonder she was their punching bag.

Man, I never even noticed that Mal got the short end of the stick half the time in this series until I saw it all on here just now. I agree that AMM hates Mal and that's too bad because she's one of my favorite characters .
