Hi everyone Sorry if I didn't look properly, but I didn't see a post on Ann. I hope someone has information about her personal life. I find it very curious that for a children book author, she never had children. I know not everybody has to have children, but I wondered. Also, she's not married and doesn't seem to be in a relationship. If I were her, I'd feel something would be missing from my life, even if I have a successful career. Does anybody know about her personal life?

If you check out her website (scholastic.com/annmartin), she posts letters, and pictures of her friends, family, and pets.

I always find it interesting that many famous children's authors (Dr. Seuss, Beatrix Potter, the author of "Goodnight Moon" who's name escapes me right now to name a few) never had children.

I don't think having kids should be (or is ;D) a requirement for a children's author. I think someone could be a great author for kids and understand them, relate to them, and like them without having them. There are various reasons people don't have kids, anyway, so that might factor into it. I know a lot of people who work with kids but can't - or don't want to - be parents themselves.

I dunno - if I was Ann, I think I'd feel pretty fulfilled. Couldn't imagine not having children myself, but I don't think it's a requirement to be a children's author. I can understand why people who don't have kids like working with them more than people who do ;D

I know someone who's a primary school teacher but would hate to have kids of her own. She says she wouldn't want to deal with kids 24/7.

^ I know people like that too (myself included ;D) and also people who love kids and can't have (or raise) them for biological and physical reasons. My aunt is an example. She would have wanted to be a mom but realized that her own health was too bad to take care of a kid (diabetes and other problems). She was a teacher for years, though, and absolutely loved it.

I don't have or want kids either, I'm not an author, but I work with children and I love children. I think sometimes not having your own makes you appreciate and even like them more.

I worked at a day care a few years ago, and many of the teachers there said they'd quit if they had their own children. They said it would be way too much to spend all day looking after children only to come home to more of the same thing. It makes sense to me. I don't think having children is a requirement for children's book authors, but I think at least liking them should be, to an extent. Greer, that story about Rosemary Wells is kind of shocking!

Why is everyone so obsessed with AMM's sexuality? I'm sorry, I just don't understand why it keeps coming up. I'm pretty sure she has kept her personal life personal for a reason. And it's not like her sexuality has any bearings on the books that she didn't write, so why is everyone (not just this board) so obsessed? Surely there has to be another topic to peruse.
And you don't need children to be fulfilled. There are plenty of women who have children and feel as though their lives are missing something. In fact, plenty of women feel they lack identity outside of being someone's wife and someone's mother. I would say that they lack fulfillment, in comparison to someone who's name is known around the world for inspiring millions of pre-teens to read and write.
