I was thinking lately, why didn't Anne include a "hispanic" girl in the BSC? I mean, there was an Asian, an African American, Jewish, and "Euro Amercian" girls. What would be her name if there was a hispanic girl? Where would she be from? What would her family be like? I thiink that she would be from Mexico City, have a TWIN brother, and... I can't think of her name right now. What do you think?

Twenty-plus years ago when the BSC series first started, the United States' Hispanic community was not as visible as it is now. If the series had been created today, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a Hispanic club member. Actually, I kind of wonder if the club's resident artist would have been Claudia Hernandez instead of Claudia Kishi.

I've never been to Conneticut but how many Hispanics live there? If the series was set in California or Texas, a Hispanic character would probably be a lot more likely.

Or maybe Ann was trying to make the rounds of including all of the races but stopped short because she didn't want to be called it for it? I dunno.

Well, eventually they did add Amalia to Dawn's CA group. A lot more realistic than the "blonde convention"! I agree that Ann/editors may not have given much thought to Hispanic communities at first.

Yeah, def agree with everything everyone has stated... and I know where I lived in St. Louis, there were hardly any hispanics, so I can imagine that there wouldnt' be very many in Connecticut.
I'm glad they added Amalia to the series, although I reallydon't know that much about her, I should really try reading more of the CD.

I kinda pretend Mary Anne is half Hispanic for some reason. I guess because her mom's name was Alma and the only Alma I've ever met was Mexican. That might actually have been interesting to have Mary Anne finding the history behind her Hispanic roots rather than just find her granny in Iowa.

Come to think of it, there is Ricky Torres in the Little Sister books. We don't hear much (if anything) about his ethnicity, but the last name would indicate that he's at least partially Hispanic.

^There's also the teacher, Ms. Gonzales (or something like that) in Dawn Saves the Planet. And like 3 of Stacey's charges in Stacey's Mistake were Latino, too, I think. There are a few minor characters who are Latino but with the exception of Amalia in CD there are no central characters who are. I really like Amalia and I'm glad they added her!

^Hispanic and Latino are essentially the same thing. Both lump together people of Spanish-speaking descent. I just really don't like the term Hispanic and prefer to use Latino instead, though they are both kind of iffy terms.
LOL. In Ann's world, all Californians ARE blond. With the exception of, like, Amalia and Carol! ;D

^I thought Carol WAS blonde until I read that she was a redhead. I was truly taken aback There were also the Martinezes, and the little girl was named Amalia too. Wonder if Ann couldn't think of another name

Does Latino include Brazillians while Hispanic doesn't?

Since Hispanic implies Spanish language and culture, I think it would be more accurate to say Latino over Hispanic, since Brazil's official language is Portuguese.

I always assumed it was because there wasn't as large of a Hispanic population in Connecticut as in other places in the US. I think that if the books were written today, there might be a Hispanic main character despite that fact, since I think cultural diversity in kids' books is seen as more important now than it was in the '80s.
Edited 'cause my grammar sucked. Like, really badly.

Were there any minor Hispanic characters that aren't jumping immediately to mind, like maybe in Karen's class or some one-time charge?
