Carrying on from the St Paddy's Day post, I was thinking about where the the ancestors of the BSC came from. Here's some thoughts - Thomas - Potentially English Kishi - Clearly Japanese Spier - I think Mary Anne said that her ancestors were Russian McGill - Potentially Scottish Schafer - Schafer's a German name... hehe just thinking of Dawn's family as the ideal Ayran family, maybe that's why Dawn's so oddly obsessed with the point of all her California friends being blond Pike - Potentially English Ramsey - An English name, but Jessi is clearly of African descent, as she has told us again and again Other families such as the Johanssens (Scandanavian), the Papadakises (Greek), the Rodowskys (Polish), the Prezziosos (sounds kind of Italian)... can you think of more?

I also think Mary Anne said she had some German in her as well...I think I heard that in Super Special # 13 when she was talking to Claudia about Pearl Harbor.

I think Charlottes family was from Denmark (Super Special 5). Maybe there's something there about where MA is from, too, I have to go reread

Actually, being Polish myself, I always found a bit of a nitpick in the Rodowskys' being supposedly Polish...because Polish last names generally end in "-ski," whereas "-sky" indicates a Russian or Czech. I suppose it's POSSIBLE to have a "sky" name and be Polish, but it's like, a 0.5% chance or something...
I'm sure AMM put as much research into names and ethnicities as, say, ballet terminology and everything else the series covered... ;D

-sky endings to names are also Lebanese, sometimes.

In Goodbye Stacey, Goodbye!, Stacey mentions that she is of Scottish and French ancestry.
Bruno is an Italian name, as is Gianelli
Rick Chow is Chinese, as are the Hsus
The Brewers are most likely of English descent

That said, it was a ghostwriter who insisted that they were Polish, so this one may not actually be AMM's fault

I know that lots of names got changed when families immigrated. For example "Stiwe" became "Stieve" and "Sholz or Sholtz" became "Schultz". Maybe that's what happened to the Rowdowskys.

In Keep Out, Claudia! Shea says they're Polish.
I always thought the McGills were Irish; I guess because I have a Mc- name and that's where it comes from, but could be Scottish as well.

Yeah, I thought Stacey said she had some Irish ancestry in Goodbye, Stacey, Goodbye, but redhed311 confirmed it was Scottish and French. Hm, don't know why I was thinking Irish.

I am now picturing you hiding in the bushes in Hawaii, eavesdropping on Claudia and Mary Anne's conversation (not that I know what you look like, but hey, you're hidden by the bushes).

McGill sounds more Scottish than Irish to me. I don't think I've ever known anyone with that surname.
Yeah, Google says scottish meaning someone from Galloway. Interesting. Now I want to look up all their names!
