Spier is German I think. I've got German ancestry, and my grandmother's maiden name was "Speer" (close enough)

Yeah, I thought Stacey said she had some Irish ancestry in Goodbye, Stacey, Goodbye, but redhed311 confirmed it was Scottish and French. Hm, don't know why I was thinking Irish. Oh now I know why...because her mom's name is Maureen and they went to Ireland on a family vacation

^ That does make sense. Must be why I assumed Irish, too.

Thomas is German as is Spier. I think SCHAFFER maybe too. McGill is definately scottish. A typical irish name will have O' and no Mc.
Johanssen...I thought that was swedish!
Kishi- I'm not sure if it is Japanese. Quite alot of people have said it wasn't.

^ There is an Asako Kishi, who is a Japanese food critic and appeared on the original Iron Chef. There was also a Kishi Nobusuke, a prime minister. And according to wikipedia, it is a Japanese surname.
I thought Scottish names were Mac, while Irish names were Mc.

^ Was just wondering about the difference in Irish and Scottish names and think you're right. Now I'm curious and might have to look it up ;D

I just read that Abby's family is German and Russian and they immigrated during WWII. I know another book also said that Claud's grandparents were the one who immigrated from Japan. I know Mal has English in her because of European Vacation when she visits the relatives there. Not sure about anyone else's background, though.

Well, I think Jessi's black , and descended from slaves, so her ancestors are from somewhere in Africa. I think Claudia's parents were also born in Japan, but I don't remember where I've read that. I have to dig up Keep Out Claudia, because that's where they're discussing their backgrounds.

^ Forgot to mention Jessi ;D I don't remember Keep Out Claudia saying too much about the sitters' backgrounds - more about the Rowdowskys being Polish, Papadikises being Greek, etc. but I might have missed something and it's worth checking.

They were discussing the Lowells at a meeting, and Stacey mentioned skinheads. Mary Ann starts worrying that they'll go after her when they somehow find out that her ancestors were Russian.

Kilbourne might be Scottish, like Kilpatrick.

Re: rodowsky, wouldn't the usual be "czki" or something? Rodowsky absolutely does not look russian to me due to the "w", but I can't vouch for czech as I don't speak it.

Rodowsky could be an Anglicized version of Rodovsky. I used to know someone with that surname, and he was actually Czech.
I always assumed the Kilbournes were Irish, but that was probably because of Shannon's first name; I guess Maria would have been Maire if they were.
