maybe she dated a john or two and they spent a lot of time in the john
I thought of some new ones
She might hate cooking cause she may have enjoyed it as a kid but was always messing it up or messing up the kitchen. I'm thinking of how she wrote about Charlotte and Becca trying to make fudge, and Karen failing at rice, cookies and cinnamon pudding, maybe she's obsessed with those experiences..... but she also made Sandra in Dawn's Book cook though she did a good job.
Something about dragons maybe, she made Stacey one in Stacey's Lie, and Claudia made the pikes do that activity where they could design one with whatever art supplies they wanted

Ann also made Mary Anne a home ec failure in that one book (I forget which one - one of mystery books, maybe?) Mary Anne couldn't master Jello, of all things.

^It was in Kristy and the Missing Child. Mary Anne was so caught up in trying to pass home-ec that she didn't have much of any time to help find Jake.
As for all the John's the only thing I can (still) think of other than she did indeed like a guy by that name was to honor John Perkins--the same with the zillion Elizabeths.

I just finished Ann's new book "Ten Good and Bad Things About My Life So Far." There were multiple references to her two biggest obsessions, I Love Lucy and Wizard of Oz. I found myself rolling my eyes after the fourth or fifth Lucy reference. The main character apparently liked to watch reruns of the show...and this book is supposed to be set in present day. I found it a tiny bit more believable that the BSC girls might have watched some episodes back in the 80s, but not so much a ten-year-old girl in 2012. I bet if I asked my nephew who's ten, he'd say he's never heard of that show.
There was also a scene in this book that was quite similar to the one in #39 when the Pike kids had to gather together and hear about their dad losing his job.

^Lol, you should ask your nephew that Candykane. BooBoo, Ann never got that "we" were tired of them so why stop now? ITA though. I was never a Lucy (or worse probably to Ann) much of an Oz fan. I still don't get why most all the charges loved Oz and even some (Linny) liked Lucy, especially as the series progressed. ETA: Lucy should have been replaced by Cosby Show or Family Ties and I just realized I don't think Ann ever mentions any 80's movies outside of 16 Candles (and possibly some horror films), does she?

I think I will ask my nephew next time I see him! Just so after he says no, I can say in my head "SEE, Ann? Kids today don't know about 1950s shows!" lol. There are just a few mentions of 80s and 90s TV and movies that I can remember. Charlotte liked The Cosby Show, the kids did the Captain Planet video for Dawn in #68, and they watched Ghostbusters in #9. I can't think of anything else that wasn't from the 70s or earlier, or wasn't something that existed only in BSC-land, like PS 162.

There was a Barney reference once too, and I think Kristy liked Kids Incorporated, she was telling Derek cause he mentioned being on it I find it hard to believe she's stuck on I Love Lucy, though Wizard of Oz I understand. Punk & hipster kids that like Dark Side of the Moon enjoy Wizard of Oz too. She must be having a midlife crisis

I have about a month left to go in the Readalong of Ann's Early Books, and all of the books that deal with someone starting high school thus far (Slam Book, Just a Summer Romance) and I feel like some other feature lipsticking, like in Dawn: Diary One. I am guessing that this is something that happened at Ann's high school, but can't she think of some other way for underclassmen to be hazed?

I always thought hazing was more of a college thing, not high school. Maybe it varies by region?

ITA with whoever said NYC. Ann thinks it's the greatest place on earth. Mary Anne thinks NYC is the greatest place on earth, too. Remember which baby-sitter Ann based on herself? Kristy is her favourite baby-sitter, but Mary Anne is the one she is most like...although I heard she said she identifies with Mallory a lot, too.

I don't think she has said that she identifies with Mallory--I think there are certainly aspects of herself that she transferred to Mallory (writing, although I think she initially wanted to be a teacher). I sometimes think of Mallory as the character on whom she dumps the things she dislikes about herself, in a way. We have a long thread called "Ann hates Mal" somewhere.

I loved how Raina left the Rainbow Brite reference in the graphic novel. I was afraid she'd take it out. In the updated book it My Little Pony. Which would have fit in the 80's but Rainbow Brite is a better reference.
