I think Mary Anne has a major passive aggressive mean streak and I think Kristy is actually the one who gets the brunt of it. Every time MA and Dawn fight, MA starts buddying up to Kristy and suddenly Kristy is her only BFF. But Kristy never seems to catch on that MA is only hanging out with her three times a week because she's fighting with Dawn. Or maybe she does, but just lets it happen because she misses having her best friend? Which is just sad since they seem unable to talk about these things. I don't know, it's always bugged me because it felt like MA used Kristy as a friend when it was convenient to her. And Kristy never seemed to mind. When things don't go Mallory's way she turns into Mean, Old Mallory and even Jessi thinks it's funny.

^ I agree too. I never thought about that with Kristy but it is definitely true. I can really relate to her as I was always getting treated the same way - the "fall back on" friend. I think Kristy might be like me, she knows what is going on but doesn't want to admit it - not because she's desperate for friends or anything but because she wants to see the good in her "best friend". That's how I was, at least....

^ I agree four, *lol*. That post really made me think. I remember some books which MA narrates and she makes it seem as though Dawn is her only best friend. It feels like the Chapter Twos always say Kristy is her other best friend for the sake of it. They don't really *show* the great friendship between MA and Kristy- it's always Dawn and MA. If I picked up any of the books after MA and Dawn become stepsisters, I doubt I would know Kristy and MA are supposedly best friends.
I remember feeling really sad when in the 'Winter Vacation' SS, I think, Dawn and MA share a bunk bed and Kristy's left with some random person. To me, it's kind of a good representation of the situation between them.
lionessblack, your post makes me dislike MA even more. (It probably wasn't your intention, so I'm sorry!) ;D

I agree six. I think that Kristy just acts like she doesn't mind because she knows in the back of her mind that Mary Anne has the capability to snatch up another best-friend like how her driving her away in the fourth book led Mary Anne "into the arms of" Dawn in the first place. And the idea of that is just a good enough deterrent to make Kristy "not mind" it.

^ I think everyone knew what you meant. ;D I think that even though the girls can be mean sometimes, none of them are doing it intentionally. Not sure why with Abby (except she may think she's being funny???) but I think MA is usually mean because she has trouble communicating, Dawn lashes out when she feels hurt or stressed, Kristy is just very straightforward and blunt, and Claudia is generally mean out of cluelessness while Stacey is when she gets too concerned about appearances and looking "cool." That's just my take on it, though. ;D

^ Hmmm. That makes me think. How in-depth do you think Ann thought out her main characters before starting to write the series? Do authors even do that anymore? I say this because I took a creative writing class for elective and we spent 2 months on developing our main character and 1 night to write the story. I think that the characters' meanness means that they are well thought out. I think it makes them very "real" as I can really relate to their reasonings or know people who are like them.
