Has anyone else ever stayed up at night before you go to sleep, thinking about a story?? Lately, i've been doing that with the whole Shannon thing. How pathetic am I? lol Last weekend I was on an interstate bus trip, and in the middle of the night I was thinking random thoughts about Shannon. It's really odd, I feel pathetic too.

I don't have it saved, but I can probably get it from Emerald-doll (the author). I'll ask her.

I think they're all fairly fleshed out. If anyone, Dawn's the one we don't know much about. Through her, you'd get a bit more on Mary Anne as well. I want to know what Dawn was doing in the Hamptons with the SDS kids last year...I thought she was basically out of touch with Stoneybrook.

It's probably because I'm not usually a fan of Dawn fanfics, but I think that anything celica wrote would have me hooked.

I would adore one from Claudia's POV. I love her in both stories, and we don't know much about what she's up to.

Has anyone been reading Meant to Be by Onlylivingboy over at fanfiction.net? I have from the beginning. I have been captivated by it: it is a good story, very well written and very fast paced. But somehow it just doesn’t seem like fan fiction. The characters have been changed quite a bit, and I kind of feel like it has been taken almost completely out of its original context. It’s almost as if it’s a work of original fiction, with BSC characters.
What does everyone else think of this story?

When I first started reading it I really liked it, but my interest has waned lately since the chapters are incredibly long and detailed and I don't have much time to read each one. The author has a real talent for writing, though. Very vivid. And I like a lot of what I've read; the beginning was particularly strong. I agree with you in that at times it seems like original fiction with BSC names, but then there are little things from the books that creep in, and it's interesting how the writer incorporates those details into the story. But for the most part, the story just feels so mature and most of the time I can't picture the BSCers in that universe.

What's Meant to Be about? I've heard good things about it.

I agree with you, although I admit I've only read the first three or four chapters. I've skimmed some other chapters and have kept up with the review section though. Plus, several of my friends have kept up on the story and we've discussed it along with the issue of what separates fanfiction from original fiction. They've all made the same points as you and from what I've read, I agree - the story is well-written, but feels far removed from the BSC universe. It reads like good original fiction rather than fanfiction. The characters have the same names, but otherwise it's often hard to recognize them as the girls we love from the canon.
An important part of writing fanfiction is keeping the characters in character, even as they age and change. Changes in personality and behavior should be justified. They shouldn't occur simply to suit the story or its author. I know that many people believe that including canon details is enough to make a story true fanfiction. I disagree. I think to be true fanfiction the story must stay true to the characters. Characters change. Characters grow up. But essentially, they need to be recognizable. The reader needs to believe that these are really the same girls, just older and wiser and less innocent. Simply tacking on the character names and writing a decent story isn't enough. If I want to read good original fiction, I can go to an original fiction site. Or to a bookstore or library. I'm at ffn to read fanfiction and I want to read stories that feel like true continuations of the series I love.
Perhaps, that sounds harsh. And I don't mean to attack that single story. It is well-written, but I feel it crosses out of the territory of fanfiction. And my comments are really aimed at stories in general, not only Meant To Be.

So Most Likely To Succeed (and now it occurs to me that we never officially saw if she won the award) has ended, and another has already begun. Grace Blume. Wow, that's pretty impressive when you can take such a peripheral character from the series and center a story around her. Looking good already. The McCrackens and Dawn!
