I read this one for the first time last night, and really enjoyed it. I'd heard a lot of people say that Sunny is unlikeable, but I liked her a lot. She is struggling with a lot of issues right now, and it does suck to have an immediate family member with a serious illness. The part that stuck out to me the most was when she said:
"I wish mom would just die already, so we could get on with our lives"
Because you have no idea how many times I have thought something similar. I think this book is really well done, and I wish I would have known about the California Diaries when I was a kid, not a twenty something.
Also, I was a little surprised about Sunny skipping and going to Venice Beach all the time, and meeting up with that guy -- but probably not as surprised if I hadn't watch "Thirteen" last week.

Just read this for the first time too, and had opinions very similar to yours Penny Lane! I also thought that Sunny was very unlikeable until I read ths book. Now I have a better understanding on why she does or says certain things. I related to Sunny in this book more than I ever would have guessed. And although I regret skipping school so much as a teen, I completely understand Sunny's need to get away and be alone for awhile.
I cant believe Sunny wanted to run away with Carson though!

I liked reading about Sunny. I think she's most likeable in her own books since then, it's understood why she does the things that she does. I think it's for the best that Sunny didn't run away with Carson.

When I was a kid, I thought Sunny's outfit was sooo cool on the cover. It actually reminds me of something that would look good on greer. This book is really sad. But at the same time, I can really feel the teen angst and alone-ness. To be honest, I kind of wondered why I didn't take any risks in school - skip class or do something naughty. Being good didn't really pay off in any particular way, not at this moment anyway (and I say that in a positive way, if that makes sense). Hopefully you're still with me, haha.

I love Sunny's outfit on the cover, because it just screams mid-90s fashion. There's actually two versions of the cover (the 90s fashion one that I'm referring to is the one that looks like bicycle shorts and a maroon velvet tunic top). Were you referring to a specific version?

^ I never knew there was a second version (I just checked it out now). I was talking about the original cover with the maroon tunic top & shorts. I wonder why they changed the cover? Maybe they thought her outfit looked too dated or something?

I always liked reading about Sunny, I felt like we got more inside to her charactor. It was nice seeing her perspective on things and not just Dawn's.

I can see sunny playing grunge if this is mid 90's, since that's when crushed velvet was so popular from 93 to 95

I like the California Diaries books, but I REALLY wish they had made them a few years older. I feel like the stuff in here is to intense for the target audience, but reading it as an adult it makes me crazy. These girls are only 13! And sneaking off to parties and getting drunk and skipping school. The lack of supervision in the BSC was quite unrealistic, but the girls were very responsible (for the most part) which made it less uncomfortable to read.

Agreed. These books true audience were not ones that skipped around reading Mary Ann and The Memory Garden. I only read this one, and I loved it but it was kind of weird to me so I didnt get anymore. It DID however make me start a journal. I never understood how she got her belly buttons pierced at like, 13/14. But I too remember the feeling I got when I read about her almost wishing her mom was dead. Guilt/relief, all from one confession.

Read this again tonight, it's so sad! I cringed when she broke the music box...it belonged to her great-grandmother Sunny's night at Venice Beach reminded me of Kevin walking the streets in Home Alone 2. "It's scary out there." "It ain't much better in here, kid." Not sure why Carson even took the time to hang out...she really acted her age around him, agreeing with everything he said.

And I keep forgetting these girls are thirteen in this; it works better if I imagine it set three years later.
