I didn't see any thread about her (other than the Jerry one). If her IQ was truly 196 why in the world would she still be in high school? In real life she might have sailed through school at a very early age. I understand that if she was not residing in the Kishi home there would be no everyday dynamic between her and Claudia and also that perhaps socially she was not ready to be out on her own. But, I just thought it was odd that she was taking college classes for two years when the writers admitted she was smarter than some of the teachers. My two cents at 9:08pm Lol.

I think they really had to have inflated Janine's IQ. I doubt it really was that high.

You're probably right, wenonah4th.

Claudia said her own IQ was above average too, but I don't think her number was ever mentioned. Is it common for kids to take IQ tests? I never did. I'm not sure I would want to know the results. ;D

Stacey thinks one of the tests she takes in the doctor's office in #3 is an IQ test.

Why would Janine's IQ be inflated if it was only mentioned in a few books? Claudia talks about it in an early book, and then again in Genius on Elm Street I believe. (Has the number appeared in other books?) I just think if we're really not supposed to believe it's that high, Claudia would have been less definitive and said "Janine's a genius, her IQ is like in the 180-190 range" and leave it at that. But yes, if her IQ is really that high I would think she'd want to be done with high school sooner rather than later.

^Maybe her parents held her back a little for her own good. I mean, there are 10 year olds in college (I've seen them on Oprah ) but just because they understand the work doesn't mean it's good for their emotional development. Not everyone is as well-adjusted as Doogie Howser, M.D.

Lol, to Doogie Howser, though I enjoyed that show very much. Doogie sort of grew on me, too in terms of being cute. Sparklymouse, since friends don't seem to play much of a role in Janine's life--sad but I think true--she probably doesn't have the best of social and perhaps even emotional skills. I could see the Kishis' not being to keen on rushing her through school for that reason but on the other hand since both C's parent's stressed academics so much, it'd also make sense that they would embrace the idea of Janine starting college as early as she could? I like that she didn't, but it might have been interesting if the discussion had come up in the books.

I doubt the ghostwriter's knew anything about IQ- Janine sounds like she's a 130ish at best. Then again, we rarely hear of her scholarly acheivements, and how much time she spends at the community college (I always thought that Janine goes to SMS, they send her to homeroom and gym, and then she leaves for the community college).
The Kishis probably wanted to make sure that Janine could be emotionally ready for college- could live alone and not be intimitaded by her peers. I also think that the Kishis wanted to keep Janine around to make sure that Janine and Claudia could still relate to each other.

Two of my [homeschooled] cousins have begun college classes while living at home and still in high school; they have been doing the two concurrently even with Pennsylvania's very strict hs'ing laws. It can be done.

My mom's IQ is in that range and it's a) lower than it would be if her first language was English (that knocks off about ten points) and b) she is definitely not Janine-level smart. 130 is above-average; probably around where Claud's is, since she supposedly has an above-average IQ.

I doubt it was that hight as well. Claudia tends to exaggerate a tad too much.

Yes, but 196 is a very specific number for it to be an exaggeration
