That's true, although they do reference past things like Pamela coming to town, Karen's haircut, Hannie's wedding, etc. I read out of order later in the series and was in the dark about the new cat Pumpkin.

I LOVED them in elementary school, and while I can't say I love them quite as much now, I still have my favorites and there are some I desperately want to read, even now. Also as an adult I see Karen as a younger version of Kristy, except a little more sensitive..agreed about her being more developed in LS but in the regular BSC books I actually didn't think she was any worse than Jenny Prezzioso.

Originally, I could care less about the Little Sister series. I thought Karen was pretty bratty in the regular series so I thought why would I want to read a book series about a brat? Your original view brings a lingering question to my mind when it comes to the haters, that if they think Karen is so horrible, liken her to a monster/devil or equate her with the out of control children on Maury, then why waste time reading her books?

^ I might not be the best person to answer, but my best guess is that Little Sister is still in the BSC universe and still relates to other characters people like.
I read BSC first and I think that might be the reason I never cared much for LS. I think I was probably too old and not in the target demographic for these books. In particular, Karen's Phone Trouble was one of the books I owned and I read that one a lot. Hearing her thought process as she made bad decisions didn't impress me very much.

Hmm, maybe it's me, but I just don't see the point of reading about someone they'll only bash, especially if not willing (or maybe just incapable of) calling a spade a spade..not to mention Kristy has some of the same traits (even when she was little) and the haters don't call HER hell spawn, they turn a blind eye..and while there are moments Karen was definitely bratty (like Karen's Christmas Tree, Karen's Stepmother come to mind) but not every misdeed she committed could/should be classified as such..like there were moments where she was irresponsible, reckless, or frustrating at worst but those aren't the same thing as behaving badly.

I read BSC first but still loved LS when I was a kid. I stopped reading them for awhile when I was maybe 12+ but I've been rereading them lately and they are a lot of fun. Yes, Karen can be a bit bratty and bossy at times, but she is only 7 years old and her heart is pretty much always in the right place. I'd say she's still learning about humility and being humble >.< But it is encouraging to read stories about young girls who are full of self confidence and willing to take charge and also who are well-meaning and learn from their mistakes. I've just reread the first 7 books and can't remember much about the rest, but I've noticed that there are so many moments when Karen learns how to be, and becomes, a kinder person which are really heart warming, she also learns about others and being aware of their feelings and needs, rather than just her own, and also about how others and their feelings are different, which are great lessons for kids at that age. I think the LS books have a really warm family feeling to them, which I love. Karen is always learning and although she's not 'perfect,' imagine how boring it would be to read about her if she was?
