Stoneybrook seems to be short of the facially challenged. I dont think i've read of an ugly kid in the bsc books at all.
All the baby-sitters are either pretty/beautiful/stunning/cute/Handsome.
In the school there appears to be no ugly kids either. Everytime a boy fancies stace/claud or dawn, they are always, always described as cute/hot/ gorgeous. Why is there never a time that an ugly kid likes them?
Most of the girls in the school seem to be model gorgeous as well.

^ total word. Everyone in Stoneybrook is beautiful. There are the token fat kids thrown in - Norman Hill and that Ethel girl at the end of Winter Vacation - but they're portrayed in a negative light and ridiculed, particularly when they're seen eating junk food, which is perfectly alright, provided you're slim and beautiful with creamy skin.
Just as the BSC never had periods, they never had zits either. Mallory was the only one with braces (and that was seen as a HUGE issue, worthy of constant whining), they were all slim and attractive - ranging from being "pretty" - Kristy - to being absolutely breathtakingly stunning - Dawn. Mallory whines about being ugly, but it's not like she's obese with cystic acne or anything - and the girls usually reassure the readers in Chapter Two that Mallory really IS pretty, even if she doesn't know it.
BTW, I had to laugh at the subject. It reminds me of Ali G ;D

I think everyone got prettier as the series progressed. In Mary Anne Saves the Day she describes Dawn as not exactly pretty, or something like that. But then later on Dawn becomes this gorgeous bombshell. I also don't remember anyone commenting on Kristy or Mary Anne being described as pretty. It always seemed like they were just plain.

They did have zits! Stacey gets one in "Stacey vs the BSC", there's one description of Kristy's ideas as "she gets ideas the way other 8th graders get pimples: in bunches", and the BSC always refer to Claudia's perfect, flawless skin as an abnormality, which I took to mean not everyone else had perfect skin.

Well, I don't think that Ann would go out of her way to point out a character's ugliness.

^ I guess, but the books were obviously written so kids could relate to them, what with all the divorced parents and all. Plenty of girls reading the BSC wouldn't have been slim and beautiful.
Also jen, you're right, there were a few vague references to zits. My mistake.

Plenty of girls reading the BSC wouldn't have been slim and beautiful. I suppose they just had to relate to akward Mal and hope they were pretty but just didn't know it, or something like that.

I thought that Dawn looking beautiful mainly came from Claudia's chapter 2s. And Claudia thought Kristy was pretty because she wanted to think of the possibilities of how to put make-up on her.

I sometimes wonder whether the descriptions actually varied depending on who was narrating. Like if one thinks another is prettier or something, but haven't really found a pattern so far.

^ I remember on one instance, Stacey claimed she was "almost speechless" the first time she saw Dawn. Even though MA had claimed "she wasn't exactly pretty, but she was pleasant" in MA Saves the Day.

Yeah, they periodically mention Dawn being beautifu. I think I remember Mal saying so in Mal on Strike's chapter 2 and Claudia in Middle School Mystery's chapter 2. Yeah, you're probably right ktag.

But, really, do we expect Ann to say something like "Stacey's hair is really fried and kinda frizzy from perming it so much, and she's sort of anorexic-looking (probaby because of her diabetes), but we love her anyway!"

Hey, I never thought about how the descriptions might change depending on who's narrating! And haha, hitzpink, I love your description of Stacey.

Eh, I dunno. I think Ann should have done some research and hear how 13-year olds really talk. I remembering harboring some unflattering ideas about some of my friends during my elementary - high school days. So I think it probably would have been more realistic for at least somebody to say something negative about somebody else at sometime.

True, in the chapter 2 descriptions, it's mostly internal thoughts, isn't it? Like, they aren't saying aloud to other friends that Stacey is a hottie. It's just them telling the reader about them, so they *could* be honest and say "Stacey has bitchy looking eyes" or something.
