MA and Kristy always looked best on the covers, IMO, which was a bit strange seeing as how they were always described as plain and Stacey and Claudia were the super-trendy gorgeous ones.

^ the BSC sent mixed messages. It was like oh, brown hair, brown eyes = boring, whereas blue eyes, blonde hair or Exotic Asian Girl = gorgeous, without mentioning features or whether the face was truly attractive. There are plenty of beautiful brunette women with brown eyes. It really doesn't automatically equal plain. And plenty of blonde/blue women are not attractive either.
Also, why are the plain dressers the girls who are also considered "plain" and the wild, sophisticated girls the ones who are also considered beautiful? Maybe those BSC girls were just impressed by their clothing styles and didn't really notice whether the girls themselves were attractive or not.

Totally agree. Claudia's hair was jet-black and therefore lovely and exotic but the brunettes just had supposedly "boring old brown hair". I guess just the fact that MA and Kristy looked so pretty on their covers lead you to assume that they are naturally good-looking and don't need the permed hair, exotic makeup, etc. They're always told it'll enhance their looks ("Kristy could look like Winona Ryder, but she could care less"), but they choose not to, which make them mature in their own way, really. Too bad that never came across in the books. And they did seem to base their standards of beauty and maturity on how they were dressed or if they put glitter in their hair or whatever. Wearing normal stuff like jeans and T-shirts especially at that age shouldn't make one "babyish".

I've always imagined Mary Anne (pre-haircut) as being quite pretty, like on the cover of Snowbound. Even though Stacey and Claudia are always described as beautiful and glamorous, I think their type of 'beauty' is one that basically appeals to young girls. Poofy, permed blonde hair (in the 80s), super-trendy clothes, etc. But I see Mary Anne (and Dawn) as being pretty in a natural, classic way.

Hell, that's all I wear most of the time. Personally I think wearing hair glitter and all that is pretty immature. It's only little kids and tweens who think that's cool.
I never understood why Kristy and MA's lack of interest in clothing = immature. Oh and also their reluctance to squawk over pubescent boys (well, Kristy's reluctance, anyway)

I often found MA and Kristy to be two of the more mature characters - Mal too even though she couldn't wear glitter like the "super mature" Stacey and Claudia ;D Maybe it is just because she bugs me, but Claudia always seemed a little immature - sticking out her tongue at Mallory in NY NY for example. I've gone on at length about this already in another post so I'll stop repeating now

^ I don't mind the repeating - it's nice to have the observations I've made ever since childhood validated in this forum!

In Mallory hates boys and gym, a few times some of the boys in 6th grade make rude comments about her appearance. That doesn't neccessarily mean she's ugly but it shows people other than her close friends think she is.

6th grade boys make comments about EVERYONE'S appearance, so that might not be the best judge as to whether someone is pretty or not.

Mallory was not attractive at 11. Maybe she grew into her looks later (although i still do doubt that, but a lot of people have agreed she very well may have), but at 11 I can totally see the boys making fun of the sturdy girl with unruly red hair, glasses, and a big honkin' nose.

^ ITA
Throw possible buck teeth into the mix (I know people have braces for loads of reasons, but knowing how the writers liked to torture Mallory, I dare say hers was a worst-case scenario) and it's a wonder the poor girl survived.
Mallory was always complaining about her nose, wasn't she? I wonder what was wrong with it? Long and crooked? I guess she also had big ears that stuck out a mile and all the other stereotypically "ugly" traits.

I always thought her nose probably had a bump on it. I always think people who get nose jobs are smoothing down a big bump, but I of course could be wrong.

^ yeah, it sounded like that was the problem. Uuugh, why couldn't she have been more specific about her nose-hate? Just "Ewwwwwww I hate my nose, I got it from my grandfather!" Elaborate, girl! ;D
