Poor Tess Swine-hart. If she was gorgeous/stunning/beautiful, she'd never have got teased. It's as if in stoneybrook, if you are not attractive, you will be terrorized.

One could attribute Dawn being "not exactly pretty" to the fact that she's an actual 12 year old when she's introduced, so it's conceivable that she underwent some growth spurt or something when she turned 13. Who knows.
What I would liked to have read was a character who isn't described as either beautiful or ugly, but perhaps something like 'quirky looking' in a way that isn't judgmental, just descriptive. Or at least didn't wildly play up how every single character was OMGMODELGORGEOUS! but just settled on something like "pretty" instead of "stunning". I always identified with the 'different' looking type characters, like Peppermint Patty in Peanuts. I have little interest in stories about conventionally beautiful people, the key word being 'conventional'. I'll take a female character who's weird and funny and interesting and has issues to deal with, over some romance novel heroine. Give me Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club BEFORE she got that d**n makeover, thankyouverymuch. Argh, sorry to rant, this has just been on my mind for awhile, and I don't mean to put down anyone who has the opposite views or anything.

^i thought ally sheedy looked terrible after her makeover!
i don't see why everyone except mal and maybe kristy had to be defined as really really pretty. i think it would have been just as well to not focus on appearances as much as they did in the books.

They never really focused on what the sitting charges looked like, did they? Apart from Jackie's red hair, and maybe some others, but you never found out whether Jamie was going to grow up to be handsome or if Claire had to worry about being called ugly. Why is it suddenly so important when you turn 11 or 13 for your looks to be (over)-analysed in every book?

^ I think a lot of charges were described as "cute" or adorable. Those are just the kinds of words you use to describe younger kids rather than your peers or elders, I think. I actually didn't think they focused on looks that much and I'm pretty conscious of this. I think it would have been worse if they would have said someone was not very attractive and I always disliked it when they were described as "interesting" looking. I think it's because they are describing their friends and want to describe them in as favorable of terms as possible and I like this. But this is just me. ;D

I remember charlotte being described as pretty rather than cute or adorable though.
