There's been a lot of talk about the frequently-mentioned food in BSC books and how it's impossible to read them without a snack. Which foods in particular have you noticed they mention a lot (other than all of Claudia's junk food, of course)
I've noticed the following:
- HOT CHOCOLATE. Ann must be a huge fan of the stuff, because everyone is always sculling it.
- Ice cream. It's mentioned that Ann likes ice cream in her bio and the amount of times it's mentioned is ridiculous.
- salads. The girls always have to help fix dinner and their job always seems to be throwing together a nice salad.
- Chinese food and pizza.
- lasagna
Anything else?

-Tofu! And all Dawn's other health food fixes.
-In the earlier books, they'd always mention snacks they made for the kids (like Ants on a Log).
-And whenever there was a party involving 'charges', you could bet there would be cupcakes and cookies all around! My favorite example is Stacey's Ex-Best Friend.

Vegetables were mentioned a lot -- carrot sticks, celery sticks, etc.
Cheeseburgers
Spaghetti
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut butter and honey sandwiches, peanut butter and banana sandwiches...they liked peanut butter!

Dawn's bean sprouts, which Mary Anne thinks are alive.
Hot dogs are always good for baby-sitting. And you can stick toothpicks in them to make them look like actual dogs. ;D

Ha, I'd forgotten about that! They really did love peanut butter. And they sure came up with some weird concoctions!
And there was always the inevitable EW-ing when someone requested anchovies.

^ In the CG, it mentions that Kristy actually likes anchovies.
I remember hearing Mallory talking about something called the Mallory Special. Supposedly it was a burrito and had salsa in it because she took the salsa out of the fridge. It was in the book where Uncle Joe stayed at their house, and the whole family had eat bland food. (I think.)

How about peanut butter and bologna or jelly and bologna? Those Pike smorgasbords can get pretty strange.

Haha, I love this thread! Good one, macca Some of my favourite food moments are from the Friends Forever series, the two notable ones I remember being the pizza that Stacey, Claudia and Mrs McGill make in "Stacey's Problem", and the lunch from Burger King that Alan arranges for Claudia in "Claudia Gets Her Guy". I seem to remember "Stacey's Lie" having some good food as well... Is that the one where her and her dad go to a nice place for dinner and he tells her about going on a two week holiday? In terms of food generally, pretzels seem pretty big.

^ Mallomars. What the heck are those? DISGUSTING! At least in my opinion, my sister and mom ate them though, they're graham cookie, with marshmellow puff and covered in chocolate. Now, I like s'mores but mallomars are NOT s'mores. Picture: www.echonyc.com/~joro/mallomars_gif.htmlHow about peanut butter and bologna or jelly and bologna? Those Pike smorgasbords can get pretty strange. Ew... I always hated reading about the Pike kids and their food! They drank TONS of soda too. I don't know... anyone remember if they actually drank water?

I wonder why fast-food chains never got a strong footing in their small town?
And I vaguely remember something called "mystery meat."

I just read something about Mallomars in Cosmo (I bought a bunch of magazines at the store downtown that sells magazines really cheap 'cause I'm making a collage, but I just couldn't cut it up without reading at least some of it). It says that they're not sold in a lot of places in the U.S. over the summer 'cause they're made in Canada and don't travel well in the heat. I thought that was weird 'cause I live in Canada and have never seen a Mallomar in my life.

Wow, that's not how I pictured Mallomars at all. I thought they'd be proper chocolate bars. We have something similar here in Australia, but they're called Chocolate Royals and I can't say they're my favorite.
The BSC was obviously written before there was as much emphasis on drinking water and good nutrition. The little kids normally drank apple juice or something and the older kids were usually drinking cokes.
In a way, it's refreshing to read something from an era that wasn't constantly preaching about the evils of occasional junk food (other than from Dawn, of course). The kids came home from school to cookies in addition to fruit and it was accepted that pizza, burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, jelly/jell-o etc was okay for a treat.
I guess those BSC girls were too sophisticated...
They preferred the Rosebud Cafe and Mexican food from that place at the mall.
