how outdated the BSC really is..... Okay, so Kylie and I are doing a Christmas exchange and I asked her what kind of American candy she wanted from me this year. We've never tried Ring Dings, so I told her I'd look them up and get her some! Come to find out, Ring Dings are no longer called Ring Dings... they are called Ding Dongs in the US and King Dons in Canada. This happened in 1987! That shocked me because not only have I had these supposed "Ring Dings", but they used to be my favorite! What other things make you realize how outdated the BSC is?

So true, I couldn't believe it... 1987!

Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls is one of my favorite books, but I have to admit that Caller ID made it obsolete.

I am sure this is fairly common but Whenever I hear the mention of a VCR or a tape player I am reminded of when these books were published. It is just amazing how far with technology we have come since these books were published.

The entire plot of #4- today the Prezziosos would have a cell phone and they'd be home in no time.

Janine's computer in the early books makes me realize how outdated the BSC is. It's described as giving her face a greenish glow when it's on, making me think of the awesome Apple computers we had in elementary school with no mouse, green text on screen, and the large floppy disks.

In the Northeast US, Drake's still makes Ring Dings. Ding Dongs are made by Hostess and are sold all over the US. Drake's is not nationwide. Many of the snack things Ann mentions are only available in NY/NJ/CT/PA--hence the confusion for all readers not residing in one of these states. Drake's, BTW, is far superior to Hostess!

^^Whew! I haven't been looking for them lately, but I also liked Ring Dings better than Ding Dongs. Abby, you should throw in some Mallomars if you can find them. Those are also a NY/NY/CT thing, so you may have some trouble. In some of the later books, they mentioned Jason Priestly as being cute. Jason who?

Mallomars are made by Nabisco so they're not really regional. My friend in CA did a blog post about them and is obsessed with them. They are, however, sold only from Oct-April due to their meltability. Would probably not last the trip to Australia, nor summer in Australia.

Jason Priestly was Brandon Walsh in the original Beverly Hills 90210. I have never had any Mallomars, but they sound good right now for some reason.

I meant that 70% of Mallomars are sold in the NY/NJ/Ct area. You can find them elsewhere, but it's just not as common.
And I was only kidding about not knowing who Jason Priestly was (hence the winky face). The reference is out of date because he was popular back when the book was written, but you don't really hear from him anymore. At least Keanu Reeves (who was also mentioned in one of the books) has a new movie coming out.

Oh sorry! I didn't mean it as rude if it came across like that, I was just informing in case you didn't know. I used to watch that show all the time.

Isn't he in the new 90210 or something? Maybe we let kylie answer this question. Keanu Reeves and Jason Priestly seemed to be the only two stars the ghosties were aware of!

Not to worry, msstock. I should have been more specific that I was joking. I didn't mean to be rude back to you.
I haven't seen Jason on the new 90210, but his character is sometimes mentioned. Maybe kylie will know if he's coming back. I did see Jason on a really awful Lifetime movie, and he looked very different from his Brandon Walsh days. Keanu still looks good.
