Greer, I made a mistake okay? I looked it up on Wikipedia and it said that the two names were combined in 1987. That is where I got my information. However, I'm now aware that you can buy the Ring Dings from Drake's and I will most likely order those.

i think ding dongs and ring dings are basically the same though, so i wouldn't spend the extra money to order drake's from the northeast.

Keanu Reeves and Jason Priestly seemed to be the only two stars the ghosties were aware of! Wes is compared to Tom Cruise, so they were aware of him, too! This is really outdated. I don't know any thirteen year old girls who are in luv with crazy Cruise. Nowadays, it'd be like Zac Efron or somthing! LOL

I am sure this is fairly common but Whenever I hear the mention of a VCR or a tape player I am reminded of when these books were published. It is just amazing how far with technology we have come since these books were published. In #2, the girls are trying to figure out what to do when they're bored, and they suggest renting a video for Stacey's VCR. It's made very clear that of the four of them, she's the only one who has one. It seems so outdated, since now pretty much every family would have at least one DVD player. Every time I read that scene, I'm reminded that it was written in 1986.

All the previous fads that are mentioned in passing throughout the books - Ninja Turtles (those were popular when I was in kindergarten!), Transformers, Troll dolls (which I collected religiously in 2nd grade heh), Rainbow Brite. It makes me feel old when all of this is considered dated!

I've heard that "fad" was an acronym for "for a day". I don't know if that's etymologically accurate.

Cable seems to be something that only some of the girls have- I don't think MA has it. Kristy and her brothers are not allowed to watch cable when Elizabeth isn't home- if you had parental controls, that wouldn't be a problem.
In California Girls, Claudia asks Terri about a country that no longer exists (my home country) having a policy of openness (glassnot).
In Dawn and the Terriable Three, Margo dances (this is epic kids) to a record. Yes guys, a record.
Claudia's phone seems... Quaint now. With most kids having cell phones having your own wired phone seems kinda cute.
Clothing wise- perms, leggings, sequined shirts.
Abby talks a lot about Mia Hamm and the 1996 Olympics.

In many of the books they make a big deal out of long-distance calls and how expensive they are. Nowadays, so many people have cell phones that long distance isn't that big of a deal. Plus there are lots of service providers that have unlimited long distance for your land line for an extra $5 or so per month. I had that when I had Comcast phone service and I have it now with AT & T. It's great because I can call my family upstate and not worry about the long distance costs adding up.

Rainbow Brite... lol... I remember Kristy snapping at Watson about a Rainbow Brite doll lol That's what I was referring to! Doesn't she accuse Watson of being a bad father because he doesn't know Karen's favorite toy is her Rainbow Brite doll? lol. Oh, in Snowbound, when the Pikes are leaving to go to NYC, they tell Mary Anne and Mallory it'll be hard to reach them in an emergency, so they should call their friends, who'll relay the message to them. Another instance that wouldn't happen now, thanks to cell phones.

It's kind of surreal that the Rainbow Brite thing is kept in the first graphic novel, because the graphic novels have stuff like DVD players and the purple streak in Claudia's hair. It's like the graphic novels exist in their own temporal dimension which is different from the time warp of the regular series...
Ouch, I think I broke my brain.
