I'm reading Stacey and the Bad Girls now, and Stacey is talking about how her friends will bring a U4Me video they've recorded on MTV. Funny that VCRs have become obsolete in just... the last ten years or so. Now kids would just type it into Youtube.
No matter what your opinion of Lerangis, he at least brought some relevant pop culture into the series. Can you imagine an Ann book mentioning grunge?
Incidentally, were 'hunk' and 'bowser' (as in, presumably, an ugly person) actual slang words in America in the 80s/90s? Or did Lerangis put those in to sound edgy?

^"Hunk" was definitely a well known slang term, although I don't really remember girls my age using it in actual conversation (like "He's such a hunk!"). And I don't think I EVER heard someone use the word "bowser" before!

Bowser sounds like an Australian or British slang.

I remember bowser was kind of popular when I was in Montana but people stopped using it because Super Mario's arch-nemesis was named that.

Yeah, that's what it immediately reminded me of. I was wondering whether Lerangis had watched his kids/nephews and nieces play one too many Mario games.

I always thought the use of bowser was funny.
I think Stacey used "hunky" to describe Cary Retlin when she first saw him? I could be wrong.

The fact that 13 and 11 year olds are babysitting is pretty outdated. Nowadays kids at this age are considered too young to babysit. I wonder how the BSC would be like nowadays? I'm pretty sure they would have a Facebook page for the BSC. That would have been kinda cool, actually. They wouldn't have to xerox their fliers. Instead, they would make fliers on a computer and print it off. During meetings, they wouldn't have wired telephones. They'd just use cell phones or even email their clients. Or use cordless phones. I think I like the outdated, old-fashioned BSC instead! It's weird how in the FF series, it is pretty up to date (well, at least for 1999-2000 ;D). There's tons of mentions of cell phones, the internet, and email, etc. Even Mallory has an internet club!

I think the Kishis would still have a land line phone in their home, especially when Mimi was ill. They could still have the meetings in her room because everyone in the family would also have a cell and there'd be no tying up the one line in the house. The Brewer/Thomas and Pike houses would also for sure have land lines. I could see Richard wanting to keep the land line and Sharon thinking it was a waste of money. Stacey and Maureen are the only ones I 100% see ditching the home phone.

^people ~40 are generally reluctant to give up landlines, so I think all the families would have them. But I don't think they'd install a separate one for Claudia and the club would use a cell phone.

Now that I think about it, I have to agree with the land line. I can see the Kishis keeping the land line.

No, I didn't mean that Claudia would have her own land line, but that it wouldn't be a big deal to use the Kishi's land line since they (at least Mr. and Mrs.) would also have a cell to be reached on. Whose cell would the club use if they used one? They could have a story line where that person ran out of minutes for the month and the club couldn't take any calls.

Maybe they'd use Claudia's cell phone. Seriously, though, in reality, nowadays, everybody would most likely own a cell phone in the BSC.
A storyline about losing minutes on the phone sounds interesting.

I had issues with my cell earlier in the week and so I called my service provider about it and they asked if I had a land line to call me back on to try to troubleshoot the problem. When I said this was my only phone, they were kind of shocked. I had a land line phone up until the summer for work but the prices of it are expensive! $50 a month was the cheapest rate and you have to pay for instillation. Canada is the worse for phones; our prices are so high and we have long contracts. Almost better to get VOIP phones now over landlines.

The girls probably wouldn't do handwritten notebook entries. Instead, they'd set up a private blog to use as the "notebook". Then there could be a storyline about their charges hacking into the blog and reading it!

^ That would be neat! It reminds of a subplot in one of the episodes in the TV show when the BSC was trying to find out who read their notebook.
