I agree completely, Elsie! I love to have pop culture/normal culture references in books from the time period. I like them in historical books too, but not to the point that it feels gimmicky if that makes sense. I always feel a little like '!' when the BSC mentions something actually from the late 80s/90s because it makes it feel like it's really authentic for the time and helps me to cement in a certain place. Also it helps with realism in any media, I think. That makes sense about historical fiction, I agree, there needs to be some balance. I agree Nancy and m0drnmoonlight, I do not think Anne was always very up to date on contemporary pop culture and what kids at those ages at that time were into. My creative writing lecturer says to 'write what you know'...but I think in this case that does not always fit. Although I understand Mary Anne liking old movies and Abby liking Elvis and Charlie Chaplin, especially since I grew up listening to 50s/60s music and watching old silver screen movies. I do think that not all of them would be that interested, let alone excited, to watch To Kill a Mockingbird. (Sorry about the lack of contractions! I think I've been reading too many Little Sister books )

I can't see many kids watching those or getting excited for them unless they're watching tons of TVLand, Nick at Nite, that kind of thing. In Stacey's Lie, Claudia and Stacey said they think Johnny Depp was cute, this was published in 94. It's up to date at least. I like that Mary Anne was into old movies though! I wish that was carried into the Netflix show haha.

Yeah, some times the guys they mentioned would either be up to date or fictional. At least they weren't dreaming about Frank Sinatra or The Beatles! haha I think in one of the Dawn California books it's mentioned that Keanu Reeves has came to Maggie's house more than once, so that was pretty timely.

The moms were dreaming of the Beatles lol, Maureen and Louise loved them which seems appropriate.

That comes up in Dawn and the We <3 Kids Club too! I think Jill was the one who asked to touch the plate and silverware Keanu Reeves used after he came to dinner at Maggie's house. I also think that's the book where they're practicing surfing and Jill sings the Hawaii Five-O theme while on the surfboard.

I saw that Matt and Haley were watching Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego in Stacey's Lie. I think that show was just rebooted.

Definitely agree with those saying AMM wasn’t up to date with then trends. How are none of the BSC obsessed with the brat pack or Madonna? In a way though, I’m glad they’re out of sync. Reading them as a child, I wouldn’t have known what was ‘in’ during the relevant time period. Instead i learnt about timeless classics like The cricket in Times Square or Lowis Lowry!

The BSC moms are the greatest. Ha!

I agree, Swizzles! I noticed that some of the later books got a bit more timely, but it was odd to see the times changed. For instance in Stacey's Book, she mentions how Laine's role model in kindergarten was Madonna, when if we go with the first books as the official timeline, Stacey and Laine would have been 9 before Madonna came out. Haha

In Stacey and the Haunted Masquerade the entire subplot was about ghostbusters and Carrie-esque (and it's brought up!).
Abby went as Lucy Ricardo to the dance. Mary Anne went as Dorothy

Going along with Jeff and Carol singing "Uncle John's Band" by the Grateful Dead for Dawn's video in Jessi and the Bad Babysitter, Jeff mentions several other times throughout the series he's a huge Deadhead.
Another Jeff one - when he leaves for California in Little Miss Stoneybrook...and Dawn, Dawn says he has a Transformer action figure in his backpack.
In Dawn and the Big Sleepover, Mary Anne is reading Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume. Dawn threatens to spoil the ending for her if she doesn't listen to her share her great idea about helping the Zuni school.
During the Pike's carnival in Dawn and the Big Sleepover, Mallory and Jessi are talking about Goober coming to perform and Claire mishears and thinks the character Boober from Fraggle Rock is coming LOL.

In book 94, Keanu Reeves, Macaulay Culkin, and Winona Ryder are all mentioned on page four.

Thought of some others.
-In Dawn and the Big Sleepover, one of the triplets' Zuni pen pals mentions Super Nintendo and Ninja Turtles in his letter. -Kristy mentions being a Mets fan a few times. Jeff also mentions hockey and being an Islanders fan and it kills me that I don't remember what book that was because that's my favorite hockey team! Maybe I dreamed it up XD -Mallory reads The Secret Garden in Boy-Crazy Stacey. She also references the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning but only Mary Anne gets it. -Stacey packs an Agatha Christie book in her bag in Boy-Crazy Stacey and Mary Anne brings A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. -Speaking of Agatha Christie, Abby keeps calling Kristy that in one of the mystery books. I want to say Kristy and the Middle School Vandal? When I first read that book, that reference went over my head and I had no idea why Abby was calling her that. -In the Shadow Lake Super Special, on the drive there it sounds like Stacey teaches the Three Musketeers the song There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight. That song was written in the 1890s, so Stacey must truly be an old soul. -When the Pikes are planning their trip to NYC in I think Get Well Soon, Mallory, Vanessa is going over the different types of waves she'll do if she makes it on tv at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
