Yeah, I like the baby-sitting chapters when they're part of the plot, not just tossed in there. Like, in Dawn on the Coast when Jessi sits for Karen and Andrew. WTH? This has nothing to do with the story. I always skip that chapter.
I'm more inclined to read baby-sitting chapters when it's about a certain charge, versus a carnival or a camp or something. Like, I love the one with Nina Marshall and her blanket. I can't even remember which book that is, but it was such a sweet subplot, and the resolution wasn't something where you were like "Um. They could have gone to their parents FIRST" or something, it was just happened upon with good timing and quick thinking.

I always skip over the babysitting chapters that include the Barrett/DeWitts. I can't stand them.

The Nina Marshall subplot was a good one, I really like that one. It's in Mal and the Dream Horse. I get so annoyed when the subplot is thrown in for the heck of it and is not interesting. I really love Abby and the Notorious Neighbor, but I hate the baby-sitting chapters with the charges in the go-cart race. So boring!

^Yeah, Buddy and Suzi are okay (and Marnie too, I guess), but I can't stand any of the DeWitts -especially Lindsey.

^ I agree. One of their worst appearances is in Dawn and Whitney, when the whole subplot is about the Barret-Dewitts house-hunting. Ow. I also don't like reading about the families with only really little kids, like the Newtons. I like most of the Pike and Arnold subplots, and the books where they sit for a whole bunch of kids (high point is #98). The Perkinses are tolerable solely for snark factor. I can kind of see why Ann M would want to keep at least some emphasis on the wholesomeness...It seems like her intention was to write a short, realistic series to help kids deal with problems, then her editors got dollar signs in their eyes when the books started selling well and eventually they made her turn the books into a series about a bunch of time-warped eleven-and-thirteen-year-olds who go on awesome vacations, but the BSC never became genuinely shallow, so for me it made it even better when you had to filter your way through the carnivals and goat-sitting to get to the fights and dating.

It's weird, as I usually like just about everything about these books (yes, I was completely in love with these as a child, and so now it's hard for me to say anything bad about them - for instance, I really don't mind most of the babysitting chapters) but I never did like the DeWitts. I like the Barretts. But the DeWitts? Ugh. I wasn't fond of them in any book I read where they were featured. What book is it again with the marching band subplot? And Lindsey is being a little brat about how she gets to go with the Girl Scouts or something. Oh, shut up. Bleh.

^I think the one with the marching band subplot is MA and the Baby Parade, but I'm not sure.

Good to see there are others who don't like the DeWitts ;D I never liked them either. I just couldn't get invested in them. They seemed to whine and fight with each other a lot. At least, I think they did--I usually refrain from reading subplots that mention them!

The Pikes fought with each other a lot too, but they were actually my favorite charges because they seemed like normal siblings to me. I think all the DeWitts do is fight, though. Plus, they all seemed pretty bratty.

I agree. I never liked the DeWitt kids either. Franklin seemed really nice but his kids always seemed to be the ones starting the fights with the Barrett kids.

I never liked the DeWitt children either. I think they should have kept Mrs. Barrett only dating Franklin, not marrying him!

^ Agreed. I liked the Barretts better as a family, instead of the Barrett-DeWitts.
And I have to agree with you bscgirl10. The Pikes did fight occasionally, which is normal of siblings, but it did seem like all the DeWitt's did was fight. Most of the books they were featured in depicted them fighting >_<

Mrs. Barrett should've married Franklin, and then they should've moved across the country.
