^ or that they would be allowed to sit for a newborn Lucy Newton.
the parents of Stoneybrook are pretty daft, but thank-friggen-god they figured this one out on their own.

What the hell did parents in Stoneybrook do in the early stages of the BSC? Only one of the members (Stacey) could stay out till 10... on weekends! More importantly, did the BSC think that Stoneybrook parents didn't stay out till after 9:30 at the weekends? Either they were not kidding when they said there wasn't much to do in Stoneybrook or the Stoneybrook parents had secret older sitters on the sly...

^Older sitters? Impossible... older sitters would do nothing but invite their bf's over and smoke cigarettes.

And let the kids play on the side of the street with no mittens on. Clearly, the only good baby-sitters in this town were the BSC.
So I'm intrigued by what liss31d asked... What *did* the Stoneybrook parents do?! Was the formation of the BSC like a parole card? "Finally, we can leave the kids and go out!"

What confuses me is, don't parents ever stay out past 10pm? I would never use a babysitter for a grocery store trip (who would?!) but it WOULD be nice to have a BSC available for a night out at the movies or something and normally you wouldn't be home until at least 10.30... and even that's pushing it. However, it sounds like the BSC are the only childcare option around - as someone else mentioned, older babysitters just smoke cigs, make out with their boyfriends and ignore the kids and extended family either live in the house or don't exist.

!!! I have the solution! Maybe there are two parallel baby-sitting universes in Stoneybrook. There's the one we know, where the BSC get hired for one hour jobs while the parents pick up the milk and bread, and in this particular universe, all the older sitters are useless.
And then at the same time, there's *another* baby-sitting universe where the sitters are older and can sit past 9:30pm, which the Stoneybrook parents consider the real baby-sitters. It's like have a real vacuum cleaner and a toy one for your kid. The BSC is just the toy baby-sitters.

I was reading "Mallory and the Dream Horse" yesterday and something occured to me. The sub-plot involves Nina and Blankie (who is never mentioned prior to this book but still). So the babysitters notice that Nina is having trouble at school
The dumb assumption? That Nina's parents don't know. Jessi doesn't want to tell Mrs Marshall because she doesn't want to worry her. I'm pretty sure Mrs Marshall would already know that since you know Nina is her daughter and all.

^lol. But knowing Stoneybrook, the parents WOULDN'T know and the BSC would have to break it them (and then cure the child of whatever was wrong.)

Just read that book! One of my favorite assumptions was Jessi thinking she would automatically be Peter Pan.

One of the things that irked me in Hello, Mallory! was when Mal and Jessi formed Kids Incorporated and are 'hired' to babysit the Pikes. Fair enough, Mallory is their sister and if she and Jessi are willing to babysit, it's perfectly within their rights, AND surely it's more logical for Mr and Mrs Pike to let THEIR OWN DAUGHTER babysit the other kids? But when the rest of the BSC see her and Jessi babysitting the Pikes, they freak out and they're like OH NO! THE PIKES ARE OUR BEST CUSTOMERS, AND MALLORY IS STEALING THEM! Um, so let me get this straight...
Mallory is STEALING customers from the BSC by babysitting for her own brothers and sisters? Where the hell is the logic in that? That's just pure stupidity and selfishness- it's really annoying! Did they seriously expect the Pikes to keep hiring them when their own daughter was available and willing?

Ugh, I know. The older girls were such snobs and too unfair to Mallory before she joined.

Continuing on that point, it was kind of dumb of the BSC to assume that the Pikes would automatically hire them after acting like such bitches to their daughter.

^Oh seriously. The BSC shuns Mallory and then expects her parents to hire them?

GREAT point!!! Although Mallory did charge them, just as the BSC did... so who knows... But we all know that Stoneybrook parents don't like to get remotely involved in their kid's lives, so chances are, the Pikes didn't even know about it all
