Yeah, I think there are many instances where we see Mary Anne and Kristy being best friends. In fact, I think there are too many to even mention. One that I can think of at the top of my head is in Kristy + Bart = ?, Kristy goes to Mary Anne for advice on Bart -- I think she's the first person she turns to? Also, I notice that in club meetings, Mary Anne and Kristy often exchange "knowing looks" at each other and don't need to exchange words.
I don't know why I am defending their relationship so much. Probably partially because I feel, in a way, it's stronger than Mary Anne and Dawn's.

^ Kristy first calls Jessi, who tells her to call Mary Anne.

I respectfully disagree, VS. I think their friendship could and should have been stronger. I wish it had been. I would have loved to have had a close friend like that from the getgo. As I continue to re-read I'll have to pay more attention to meetings and see. I do agree that what they once had was way stronger than the friendship between Mary Anne and Dawn. I've said this before but aside from early books, I don't consider MA/Dawn to have had a true friendship, at least not a healthy one!

when you think about it, most of MA's relationships are unhealthy. not just with kristy and dawn, but logan and sharon too.

^Good point, Oldhickory and I think sadly very true. I still find it hard to believe that Dawn was the first friend Mary Anne made on her own. What if there had been no Kristy? Would MA have ended up completely isolated?

Would MA have ended up completely isolated? My guess is she would have been less shy, or at least not cripplingly so. Having Kristy and her loud mouth for a BFF probably enabled her to retreat further into her shell than she would have otherwise. Dawn was the first friend she made on her own because it was really the first chance she had without Kristy being there to help her avoid confronting her shyness.

The truth is we didn't see many instances of Mary Anne and Sharon talking, hanging out, whatever. When we did (Camp BSC or the book where it seems like Sharon is wanting MA to be Dawn), the dynamics were a bit off. The other part though is, as I've said before the Spier family of 3 (once Sharon married Richard her surname should have been only Spier unless she decided to keep her maiden name of Porter) with or without Dawn and Jeff I never thought of as a "family." They all lived together but that was it. There was little interaction and probably because the BSC girls were supposed to be super mature and rarely did anything with their own families, little times spent doing anything.
Nodding, Lila. Shrug, I just think it odd that MA never made any type of friend before Dawn but that's just my opinion.

^ that is what i was getting at. i just happened to have finished reading both camp bsc and little princess, and both of those books really show the strain in their relationship. MA can't seem to make up her mind -- in those books she is angry with sharon for acting too much like her mother and ALSO angry with sharon for NOT acting like a mother. i wanted them to connect because MA lost her mom and sharon lost her daughter (sort of), but it didn't really happen.

Well, I'm really just drawing from my own experience -- I was kind of an MA growing up in that I spent K-12 in the same school district, had a few friends I was close to from kindergarten, and most of the friendships I had until graduating high school can be traced back to my kindergarten clique. It wasn't until I started college that I was really thrown out of the frying pan and into the friendship fire -- I had a few false starts in high school extracurricular activities where I would literally just sit by myself like MA in the cafeteria because I didn't know how to approach people. I can see Mary Anne doing that until she realizes she has to suck it up.

In Claudia and the First Thanksgiving, Mallory mentions her family's Thanksgiving plans in New York -- involving the Macy's parade -- that ends up getting canceled in Mallory's Christmas Wish.

^I thought that was in Get Well, Soon Mallory? Or did the Pikes plan to go to the parade in both books. I haven't read either in a long time and don't remember.
Although:
Get Well Soon Mallory took place during the BSC's 6th year of 8th Grade Claudia and the First Thanksgiving during their 8th year Mallory's Christmas Wish, one book after Baby-sitters Beware which was also during their 8th year.

I think you might be right! I wrote that as I was reading Claudia and the First Thanksgiving, not as I just finished it. Then Mallory's Thanksgiving plans get cancelled in book #91 which inspires the BSC to have a joint dinner.

I'm in the early 20's books and there have been several mentions of a new kid fitting into the Brewer house and of Kristy saying her mom wants another kid.

At the end of "Jessi's Baby-sitter," Mal tells the BSC that her Dad's company might end up laying off half its employees.
