In Kristy's Big Day, at dinner, Charlie asks his mum if he can have a drink of wine... then Elizabeth says that he can only drink when he reaches the drinking age and Charlie argues that all kids his age do and he'll be starting college next year... poor Charlie, no matter what happens every year you will never turn 21, but remain 17 ;D Aha, I thought that happened in some book, but I didn't remember which one.

Legal drinking age here is 18, so Charlie drinking at 17 may have been okay with Liz over here. That said, my Mum only ever bought me alcohol once, for Schoolies (after year 12 students graduate, they go away in groups to Sufers Paradise without parents... kinda like an underage Spring Break), and I didn't drink it then. However, I used to drink all the time when I was 13/14. I stopped when I was about 15. Now I hardly ever drink. Funny, huh?

In "Mary Anne and the Great Romance", I remember Mary Anne mentioning to her Dad that he should get champagne for himself and Sharon for Sharon's birthday surprise and says that "she and Dawn won't drink any -- it's just for them two".
I remember rolling my eyes at that because it was a stupid moment between her and her Dad, almost as if he *wouldn't* get champagne if she didn't say she wouldn't have any.

It's not that strange. Some people drink before the drinking age because of the fact that it's illegal for them to drink, so once they reach the drinking age, the amount of drinking goes down.

In #50, Richard and Sharon invite Mr. Ramsey to toast the new year with champagne when he drops Jessi off at their house.

There's a mention of brandy or whiskey or something - I don't quite remember - in Kristy and the Cat Burglar. Kristy knew exactly what it was, too, just by watching Gollem drink it. This surprised me a little. At 13 I don't know if I would've been able to tell the difference between them - maybe I was innocent and naive - so I was slightly taken aback by the fact that Kristy knew what he was drinking. I've actually always gotten the impression that Patrick Brewer might have had substance abuse problems when the kids were young.
