Don't you need to have a certain amount of body fat for your period to start? That's why gymnasts and dancers tend to get theirs later. Jessi probably wouldn't have gotten hers for another five years. The boob thing bugged me too, especially with Stacey. Obviously not always, but thinner girls tend to have smaller breasts since they are pretty much just fatty tissue. How did Stacey manage to be almost too thin but with big boobs? Then again, a big chest to a 13 year old might not actually be that big.

Huh. You're right, it is weird that Stacey was supposedly busty. But then if I had to pick any of the girls, it would definitely be Stacey who seemed like the padded bra type.
ETA: I am thankful I never had to read a Peter Lerangis reference to menstruation. Lord knows what acronyms he'd have made up for that.

I think it would have been okay if they threw it in like the bra thing. Like have Logan come to a meeting and the girls all get embarassed because theres a maxi pad on the desk or something. They didn't need to talk about it, but acknowledging it would have been ok.
BTW as long as we're telling first time stories, as I mentioned before I was 10. It was one of the last days of 4th grade and we were out playing on the playground. I felt weird and went inside to use the bathroom and there it was. I have an older sister so I knew what menstruation was, I just thought I was too d**n young. I cried later when I got home, because I thought something was really wrong with me hahaha. And all we had were tampons... carboard applicators. I cried until my sister went out and got me some pads.

Oh man, I seriously laughed out loud... that is GREAT!!!
Maybe he'd have gone by the internet acronym of AF (for Aunt Flo) or MMV (My Monthly Visitor)... ugh, don't even want to think about it!
Awwwwwwww spazgirl I can't help feeling sorry for you and everyone else who was so horrified to discover that puberty had arrived earlier than expected. It must've been so overwhelming!

I was a very late bloomer too. Is there even a normal age?
I'm not sure they could have just mentioned it offhand. It's the kind of subject that would bring up questions, and then you can't not answer them. Maybe if the target audience were older and would already have been through it. I don't know.

Well, there's an average of course, but there's such a wide range it's hardly relevant. Girls are getting their periods younger than ever these days and apparently it has something to do with hormones in poultry. Not sure how accurate that theory is, though.

Well, the hormones in the food combined with the obesity "epidemic" in children. They reach that certain percentage of body fat much sooner and their bodies have matured due to the hormones. That's just one theary though.

In all honesty, do we want to read about periods or girls bleeding down below? As if it's not bad enough in real life.

I always heard the average age for getting periods is between 12 and 14...I was about a month away from turning 14.

I started my period when I was ten, too, (and felt very cheated as well) and I know most of my friends started at eleven. however, in the book/filmindustrie they always make it seem like 12 or 13 is a normal age to start. Before I had my period, I was terrified of it, really terrified. I think a few mentions in the BSC books or someone wanting to get hers would've made it less scary for me. Maybe this goes for other girls, too, so a mention wouldn't have been so bad.

I agree, but I also agree with ktag that because the books are targeted to such young girls, mentioning at all likely would have brought up a lot of questions in those girls' minds. And in that case, it would have been weird not to divulge into it further. For some reason, even though she has a small stature, I can totally see Kristy growing really big boobs once she hits puberty and trying to cover them up with baggy sweaters and stuff.

True enough, but the success of Judy Blume indicates that tween girls ARE interested in that stuff.
I also agree that the whole thing is very daunting and overwhelming for prepubescent girls and perhaps "normalizing" it through BSC or other medium would make it less of a terrifying mystery.

Just wondering Macca, do you have the original version of Are You There God, It's Me Margaret or the updated version? I remember being rather horrified by the original. I still don't understand the whole sanitary napkin belts that they had to wear. Thank God for the creation of adhesives.
Off topic, but I really wish Judy Blume would write some more books. I think the last one she did was another dumb sequel to the Fudge books.
