Dawn actually does come across as laid-back in this book. I think this is probably the best portrayal of what her character was supposed to be. And omg she eats junk food in this book! Gummi worms, saltwater taffy, and cookies (and tea with sugar). Super weird! I think that's more realistic though.
I like her trying to be friends with Kristy, her buying barbecue stuff for the party, and the description of her house (or was that in #4? Either way, I love it. It's my favorite house in the series). Mrs. Barrett put way too much pressure on her with the "You're the glue that's holding us together" stuff. Totally inappropriate to put that on a 12 year old. If money is tight, why does she need a babysitter for simple errands (job interviews I understand. But going shopping, wtf)? Why does she always look put together but her house and kids aren't taken care of? I just can't stand her honestly, and judging from this thread, I'm not the only one. It's also really awful that she forgot to tell Dawn about Marnie's allergy.
Speaking of Marnie's allergy, it said that she began to eat the m and m's and Dawn stopped her. She probably didn't get sick because she only ate one or two. Could still be a mistake, though. It's also weird that David Michael is allergic to chocolate as well. Doesn't seem that common (I don't know anybody who's allergic to chocolate).
The picnic was pretty great. Dawn's Genius Inside shirt and her thinking that Mallory was taking Marnie's brownie were classic.
I'm surprised that the Barretts aren't close to Dawn later on in the series. Maybe Mrs. Barrett really did back off (if I was Sharon, I would've told her off, just like she did in the Netflix series), or maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Once Franklin came into the picture, Dawn was off the hook.

I'm surprised Richard married Sharon. I mean Dawns parents got divorced because her father was a really organised person-same as Richard. And their marriage could not handle Sharon being a lazy slob. So why did Richard marry slob Sharon? What's makes them different to Jack and Sharon? None. And I don't believe in soul mates either.

Maybe they were so happy to get a second chance that they didn't consider how rough it would be. They were both probably really lonely.

I don’t believe they divorced because of how organized Jack was. There was a lot of problems in their relationship though. In Dawns portrait book I though Jack was cheating on Sharon.

I didn’t realize that Jack was supposed to be organized.
I imagine that Sharon and Richard felt a natural comfort level of already knowing each other. I don’t think they were ever portrayed as soul mates, were they? Richard didn’t settle for Alma and I’m sure he wished that she was still there with him.

I know some fans have speculated that Jack cheated on Sharon and some think Carol was the other woman. It's been years since I read Dawn's book. Is it said why they divorced? I remember Dawn saying she noticed her parents were arguing a lot before they decided to divorce.
