I love this book! I just re-read it this weekend. I think it might be my favorite Dawn book. I didn't mind her confronting Mrs. Barrett. I mean her children were going to DAWN at all hours of the day with their problems and for comfort - calling her at home, showing up randomly... none of that is her responsibility and I think she was justified in complaining. Esp because Mrs. Barrett really was depending on Dawn to basically raise her children and keep her house clean. Arrgh that woman drives me nuts. I loved how Kristy didn't like Dawn and was jealous of her. Totally understandable.

"What do you think you're doing, Mallory? You'll get your brownie in a minute!" It just never gets old.
I think Dawn wears her "Genius Inside" shirt in this book. Love that.
The get-together with Sharon's parents and Richard is also fun, with Dawn, Kristy, and MA just sitting around gossiping. There's a reference to the Phil Donahue show somewhere in that chapter, which I find amusing.
I don't think Mary Anne was very sensitive to Kristy's feelings when she leaves her out of redecorating her room at first. Felt bad for Kristy when she glances through her bedroom window and sees MA and Dawn.
That's a good point...gee, what's up with these early titles. The complete inaccuracy of Claudia and Mean Janine, for example...

I loved this book. When I was younger I read it over and over. The brownie moment with Mal and Dawn was great. Mrs. Barret always annoyed me because it shouldn't take a 12 year old to get her family together.

Totally agree with all the posts today. I loved this book - it is one of my favorites. I had forgotten the brownie thing but it is a classic. Seems strange to read after reading later books when Mal is part of the club - Poor Mallory, trying to help and getting in trouble for it.

I often felt bad for Mallory in many of the books. She was such a nerd and a underdog. It is weird to read about her before the babysitters club.

^I agree, it's really weird reading about Mal as a sitting charge. The BSC flips back and forth on her, they're like she's really helpful and blah blah but then you have something like the brownie incident where it's just kinda like "oh dumb little Mallory..."

^ And giving her brother the Bizzer Sign certainly didn't help matters.
My God, I know they're just kids, but all of the hooplah over the Bizzer Sign was absolutely ridiculous. It even annoyed me at seven years old, when I first read the book.

I remember the Bizzer sign! I had no clue what it was until I saw an illustration of it somewhere.

^ Yeah, it was in SS7, Snowbound. Who was it.. Nicky? Or one of the triplets, basically standing there pointing at Claire who is cowering around Mary Anne like it's the worst thing ever. So stupid.
Anyway, back on topic, I haven't read this book in ages! But reading through this thread makes me want to read it again soon. (Much more than Stacey & the Mystery Money which I've been trying to force myself to finish for the past three months.) I thought that the decorating MA's room thing happened in MA Saves the Day, but I guess not. I always liked how there was always a bit of tension between Dawn and Kristy over Mary Anne. Very realistic for their age.

Yeah, when I was younger I thought the tension between Dawn and Kristy was dumb, but as I got older, especially now I can see how its very realistic for two girls that age to get competitive.

^ And giving her brother the Bizzer Sign certainly didn't help matters. My God, I know they're just kids, but all of the hooplah over the Bizzer Sign was absolutely ridiculous. It even annoyed me at seven years old, when I first read the book. That didn't bother me so much, it seems like just a stupid little kid thing. It's not the sign itself so much as the meaning behind it. When I was a kid, my brother and sister and I would point at each other and say, "Pointing at you!" and then make a laser noise. I bet if I were to do that the next time our family got together for dinner, my brother or sister would still shriek and hold up one hand as a shield, and we're 28, 25, and 21. It's just a silly thing now, but when we were kids, we took it very seriously and could even (rarely) make each other cry by doing it. I think the Pike kids having a special sign to annoy each other is much more realistic than them all working together to put on a backyard carnival talent show. I like this book. I really dislike Dawn in some (most) of the later books, but I didn't mind her in this one. She just seemed like a normal kid trying to adjust to big changes and new friends. Mrs. Barrett bugs me though. It always seems to be all about her, without much thought for the kids.

I always compare the Bizzer sign to the episode of Friends where Ross and Monica talk about that fist bumping thing they made up to be able to flip each other off in front of their parents. Just a silly thing kids do, I guess, except it'd make more sense if the Pike kids hid the meaning from their parents. What's the point of having a secret sign if you tattle every time it's used?

I always compare the bizzer to that episode of Friends, too. That was one of my favorites. I agree about the secret meaning but it still makes me laugh. I love this book for so many reasons.
