I remember DM's chocolate allergy being mentioned in a LS book. Karen's Brothers, I think.

I really don't get the Mrs. Barrett hate. She's easily the most realistic single parent in BSC land with actual faults who married young, had three kids in quick succession, got divorced and forgot how to function properly.
I think it's a BSC book that doesn't get it's due- it's very realistic (although the jump from December to May really irked me; I wanted to see more 7th grade BSCers.)

I was just reading 3 WIllows by Ann Brashares and Polly was saying that the hardest part of baby-sitting for the Rollins family wasn't the Rollins kids (if you've read the Traveling Pants books, these are Tibby's younger siblings), it was Mrs. Rollins because she was always running late and losing her keys and stuff, and I was thinking, MRS. BARRETT! Then it said that Polly always played with the kids she was baby-sitting instead of talking on the phone or whatever, and I was thinking, BSC!

I get that Mrs. Barrett has her faults like we all do, but how busy is she, really, if she was only going on job interviews? Didn't she go shopping later in the book when Buddy was kidnapped? She wasn't giving Buddy help in the homework department, which I would think she would consider important (and his family tree stuff didn't seem TOO difficult.) I mean, with three kids, I know I would be very forgetful, but I would at least try to comb my poor kids' hair.

Completely off topic, but wanderingfrog how is 3 Willows? I want to read it even though the last two Traveling Pants books were big disappointments.

Mr. Barrett got him self in more trouble by kidnapping Buddy. I wonder why they didn't stay married.

bringing up an old thread. i've kind of been reading the series in order, and i just finished this book the other day. i've said it somewhere else but i think the barrett family is really gross. when dawn first sits, marnie's diaper is drooping, and buddy has a grubby bandaid on his finger. i can understand being busy, but at this point in the series mrs barrett doesn't even have a job. is she really so pressed for time that she can't change her child's diaper? dawn was not nearly enough help -- somebody should have called CPS on mrs barrett. i don't think the m&ms were an inconsistancy. i don't remember that part in the book, but as i was reading the old posts i wondered if maybe the m&m episode was slipped in subtly to maybe foreshadow marnie's allergy and to establish early on that mrs barrett was completely useless. but then i was thinking, if that were the case, dawn would have said "omg, i totally watched marnie eat m&ms, what a terrible sitter am i" or something. so i don't really know.

I like that book! But not as much as Mary Anne Saves The Day. The plot is quite cute.

Agree with others on Mrs Barrett. She seems like a self absorbed princess! She really irks me when she comes home from when Mary Anne sits and yells something at Buddy about how she can't be expected to deal with his problems then breaks down in tears.
The first time I read this book the kid-napping scene was pretty full on, poor Dawn! The whole Barrett divorce seems very petty and immature, but I also think it was portrayed very realistically.
I also enjoy the formation of a relationship between Kristy & Dawn. I think it's great that Dawn is able to identify that Kristy is jealous and wants to make a genuine attempt to fix that instead of competing to try and 'win' Mary Anne to herself.

The barn swinging is a neat interplay between K. and D.

Mary Anne "wins" Dawn to herself, all by herself, I'm afraid. I may not be a Dawn fan but I do admit that she did nothing to intentionally "take" MA from Kristy, MA did that on her own. Though to be fair, Kristy (at least that we read about) didn't seem to invite MA over much either..
Back on topic of this book, I liked the barn swinging also. I thought Mrs. Pike was awesome in how she protected Jordan and was there for Dawn. I wish Mal did have a Portrait book so we could have had a greater glimpse into the Pikes.
Otempora, ITA agree about wishing 7th Grade had lasted younger. Heck there were 13 years of 8th Grade, there could have been a few extra books for 7th. After reading the prequel, it would have been cool to have read about 6th Grade even, so we could have gotten the BSC's complete time at SMS.

^ i agree, they spent too much time in 8th grade and not enough in 7th. the last day of 7th grade was right at the beginning of book 6. that's crazy. they should have stayed in the same grade the whole time, or switched grades more toward the middle of the series. but the way that everybody aged exactly one year (at exactly the same time) was really awkward.

I wish we could have actually read about them each aging in the regular series, aside from Mary Anne. Stacey and Dawn should have both turned 13 before the end of 7th grade. Since they never "repeated" (aside from Claud) 7th Grade, no reason for them not to turn 13. I wonder if Ann ever regrets that or if she knew then the Series would last so long and that she would chose to keep them in 8th Grade, if things would have been different?
