I just got the new edition of this book and I flipped through it to see if I could find any changes in the text. The only one I noticed is something that seems like a good thing to change. In the original book, when Dawn finds the nickel in the secret passage, she says "It had a picture of an Indian on one side and a buffalo on the other" and she calls it an "Indian-head nickel" throughout the rest of the book. In the new edition she says "It had a picture of a Native American man on one side and a buffalo on the other" and calls it a "Buffalo nickel" throughout the rest of the book. I didn't notice any other changes just flipping through. I wondered if they'd change the part about Nicky saying that his old-fashioned ice cream cone cost "a whole dollar," since they changed some prices in earlier books, but they kept that the same.

This is another one of my favorite books! I read it so many times. And like other people on here, I was confused by the cover because Dawn and Jeff are looking at a staircase going up, when in the book, the secret passage leads down. I'm not too big on ghost stories, I'm more of a Mary Anne, but I did think it was so cool that Dawn's house had a secret passage. I was so annoyed when the girls were looking around her house for any signs of a secret passage and Dawn found the hollow wall in her bedroom. Then Claudia shines the flashlight on it and didn't see anything else, so she concludes it was a false alarm. Despite Dawn distinctly finding a hollow sound, which is one of the things Claudia said to look for!
Dawn also mentioned Kristy giving her a Look as she explained what they'd be looking for at her house. Like I know Kristy had issues with Dawn in the early books and was obviously very jealous of her friendship with Mary Anne. But my god, Kristy - it's Dawn's house! It's ok if you're not in charge for once.
I felt bad for Nicky, the triplets are always pretty mean to him but they took it to another level in this book. Also how gross did their smorgasbord lunch sound? Wasn't one of the triplets eating peanut butter out of the jar with his bare hand? Ew. At least use a spoon!
As for Claire's hair not being the same since Vanessa and Margo doused her whole head with the sample bottle, I took that to mean it was shiny and greasy from all the extra shampoo.

What was Stacey doing? She was doing the Pikes chores for them and leaving Vanessa, Margo and Claire to their own devices. She's a baby sitter not a housekeeper.

I think this is the one where Dawn mentions that some families pay extra if they do housework? That didn't last long in the series

I think I would have liked that. Parents have to multitask daily, so why should the babysitter be tied to the kids? I'm always for more money. True, I would rather vacuum a floor than hang out with a baby...

I would also rather clean than babysit, but it probably went away because it's not fun to read about chores.

Jeff's flashlight looks like one of those little hand held fans. He will blow the ghosts away. This is an attic.

I actually like all the covers. All of the characters look nice. Perhaps for the third cover, the stuff might be near the entrance of the secret entrance instead of an attic. As to why stuff would've been left there, I don't know...

I like all of these different artistic interpretations of a secret passage and none of them capture the book description. Jeff looks like Eddie Munster. Some of the book title translations: The ghost of Dawn's dog (? Did he know Mallory's ghost cat?) A ghost in Betty's house Violet’s home is haunted (I like this. Straight to the point, no sugarcoating the situation. ) Diane and the ghost Carole and the secret passage Dawnrose and the secret passage

I love this one! It makes me nostalgic for when summer was actually an enjoyable break (summers are hellish where I live).
I've always liked ghost stories, so I liked this one. I never thought about the logistics of the passage when I was younger and always thought it would be the coolest thing ever to have one. Weirdly, I don't remember searching for one, though. I didn't notice this as a kid somehow, but Dawn never actually confirmed that she lived in Jared Mullray's house. I wish that had been confirmed at some point in the series. As it is, her reasoning is pretty loose.
The shampooing scene was actually kind of funny and I don't think Vanessa and Margo were being mean. They probably didn't realize what they were doing.
I definitely think it's weird that Nicky was allowed back in the passage. Doesn't seem safe to me. Then again, it was a different time I guess.
I loved that the 5 club members were together a lot in this one. The chapter where they were looking for a secret passage was actually pretty funny. Loved them trying to scare each other. Loved the sleepover at the end too. For the record, I would've chosen Ghostbusters.
The Trip-man chapter is fun. I like seeing Dawn act so silly. WHY would you wait to tell someone that you suspect the passage is haunted until you're both in there? Wtf Dawn lol.
Also, on the day I read this book, we got a random thunderstorm in my area, which NEVER happens in summer. Kind of cool.

This is such a good book. It does have that wonderfully nostalgic summer feel. I live in a house built in the 1940s and can’t imagine living in a house as old as Dawn’s! Sharon must have had to do a lot of maintenance.

Was there an actual reason Mary Anne and Dawn disliked Trip aside from that he wasn't Mary Anne's father? Was his nickname Trip they thought him trying too hard to sound young and cool?

I think his real name was Trip, because he didn't seem like the type to have a nickname.

It was a nickname. His name was Theodore Gwynne. I wonder how his life turned out. Fascinating one-time character.
