I guess some of Mary Anne's passive aggressiveness/anger toward Dawn was Dawn's doing. Maybe Mary Anne really did feel that the one friend she made on her own might have never even been her friend or only when she (Dawn) needed MA.

this part just grosses me out. MA walks into dawn's bedroom to wake her up, and dawn hurries to get dressed:
i pulled on a pair of white shorts and a short-sleeved flowered blouse, slipped into straw sandals, bent forward, then quickly brushed my long blonde hair. "ready!" i announced.
but there is no mention of dawn changing her panties! considering someone is standing right there, i highly doubt she does. i can understand being late because that's the story of my life, but no matter how late you are running, you have to make the time to put on clean underwear (especially when you are going to your job.) and another thing, she is supposed to be sitting for the hills because mr and mrs hill are going to the gym. but do working adults really go to the gym at 9 in the morning on a monday? i sure don't.

Mr. and Mrs. Hill work from home. Eh, I think the ghostwriter just didn't want to mention Dawn changing her panties.

Yeah, I can't really think of a way to clearly add that Dawn changed her underwear that would be neither creepy nor awkward. Maybe she showers at night? I do, I am a fanatic about "dirt from outside" getting nowhere near my bed.

I think there were a few instances where the book narrator rolled out of bed, changed her clothes (w/o mention of any undergarments), and went off to do her plans for the day. Nobody ever bathes in Stoneybrook.

^Or worse, has to use the bathroom. That was something I wondered about in Kristy and the Mother's Day Surprise. I know the kids kept using Claud's bathroom before the carnival but of course during there was no mention.

you guys all make good points, but that part will still always bother me. it could have said that dawn hurried into the bathroom to change, or that MA left the room while dawn got dressed, but they wrote it the awkwardest way possible :]

^Maybe Dawn wore underwear to bed? It could have been her "time of month." I'm editing this 3 years later after reading through this part in this thread) to say I think whoever wrote this simply didn't feel the need to tell us Dawn put on (or had on) underwear and probably out on a bra, too.

I change in front of my female friends. And they are stepsisters to boot. Saying "dawn changed her panties" or whatever sounds porn-y. In Stoneybrook, they're like Ken and Barbie: no genitals!

^Maybe Dawn wore underwear to bed? It could have been her "time of month." But that's another (those lucky girls) Stoneybrook mystery. I don't think anyone thought she wasn't wearing underwear, just that she spent the day wearing a dirty pair. However, you now brought up a new possibility for Dawn's California casualness. Maybe she goes commando.

I'm rereading this for the first time in years. I just won it off ebay recently. Has it already been discussed that Mallory has a sitting job for Claire, Nicky, and Margo (Vanessa and the triplets were swimming with friends), but it says that Vanessa comes running up the stairs with Nicky (instead of Margo)? Oh inconsistencies!
I always liked this book and Mary Anne's reaction to Dawn leaving - she smashed the coffee cup to the floor - but thought it was way dramatic.

I thought Christmas in July for James was really sweet
Also, I thought Mary Anne was very bitchy at Dawn's party, and especially for not being involved with the picture slides, or whatever project that was. And with saying things like "there will be some surprises" I've already said in another thread that Dawn and Mary Anne really brought out the worst in each other from day one, and this is definitely the worst I have seen between them.
