One word sums up this book to me: STRAWBERRIES!

Like some of you have already said, the strawberry internet chatroom seemed so funny to me. I can buy that there might be a message board online dedicated to strawberries, but an actual, active-at-that-very-minute chatroom dedicated just to strawberries? So funny. I'm guessing the writer wasn't overly familiar with the internet at this point, and had just been told stuff like, "It's the internet, they have chatrooms for EVERYTHING!" Overall, I actually did enjoy this book and thought it was one of the better ones. It's funny how Stacey sounds so freaking adult in this one - all her internal musings about relationships and staying friends after a breakup, it's like she was a younger Carrie Bradshaw. That being said, I did genuinely like the scene where Stacey and Robert both openly tell each other they love each other at the dance. Like Amalia said two posts ago, it seems pretty unlikely that two 13-year-old boys would be open enough to say emotional things like "I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when your parents were going through a divorce."

I do remember chat rooms being a much bigger thing in the late 90s, though. AOL and ICQ both had them for every imaginable topic--although maybe strawberries IS stretching it...

We had AOL and I remember I would spend time just typing in random words to see if there was a chat room for that word.
This book talks a lot about stuff that happened involving Robert around Valentine's Day. I assume that happened in Stacey and the Mystery of the Stolen Hearts? That's one I don't have.

My mom would freeze our strawberries we had forget about them and she bought more the next day. We always had strawberries!
I was surprised to see the chat room just dedicated to strawberries.

Can I talk about something other than strawberries? Like the ex-friends that Stacey talks to about Robert? I have no problem with that - these characters were mostly introduced in "Stacey vs the BSC" (Andi) and "Stacey and the Bad Girls (Heather and Jacqui). But there wasn't really any closure to the ending of the latter. You'd think there would be at least one scene between this one and another where one of the girls is like "How come you won't hang out with us?" and Stacey would be all "Um...because you drank at that concert and then tried to frame me for doing it too". Or like the girls act like the concert never happened and expect Stacey to do the same, but find that Stacey keeps blowing them off and when they ask her why, she explains. They tell her to get over it, but no joy. That would be realistic, unless they really didn't like Stacey. And I'm sure they could've found another sucker if they didn't like her. I suspect that she told Andi about it at some point and it got back to the other girls, but still, it feels a little weird. If I hadn't read that, I'd have no idea that she ever spoke to Heather before. I would really love it if there was a reference back to Stacey being friends with those girls. Like Heather could say "You know, I kind of miss hanging out with you, and I feel really bad about what happened at the concert." To be honest, the only one of the "bad girls" that felt really not good was Jacqui. The label is probably why it feels off that Heather's interaction with Stacey is so neutral.
Jacqui...well, she was always the cruelest of these girls - I don't think she was nice to Stacey even when they were supposed to be "friends". But again, she had a crush on Robert, right?
I know, this wasn't really about the book. I just found it weird that Stacey would be able to talk to the girls she broke friends with like that book never happened. And as a matter of fact, why are Jacqui and Heather in this book, but not Mia?

I think the cover would be better if Robert were holding a beer all lethargically. He does look kinda wasted. Bwahahaha! So true! Wow, that cover is terrible. I find it hard to believe that the girl is Stacey - sophisticated, so-beautiful-she-could-be-a-model Stacey! She's so trendy, she matches the kitchen decor! No, I think it was fine that Stacey didn't always look like a "sophisticated model" on all the covers. I think it would have even been better if Stacey had been shown with her thick brows slanted in worry since she truly was worried about Robert. And most of the other girls were as cute as Stacey...Stacey didn't truly stand out as outlandishly beautiful like the Sweet Valley twins or Taffy Sinclair. And although Stacey likes fashionable clothes and accessories, she was not any vain clothes-horse like Jessica Wakefield or Lila Fowler. I think most of the rest of the BSC were as sophisticated as Stacey, but they didn't realize it yet. Yeh, the strawberries...maybe the parents preserved them using a special method...who knows. I've always hated strawberries, so to me, strawberry-picking would be disgusting for me.

I actually have many memories of this book. I just read it again recently. I remember seeing it for the first time on a store bookshelf, right when it first came out. I was a little too old for BSC books at the time but secretly wanted to buy it and read it. I remember noticing Stacey's odd, robotic pose and her hair looked a little thin, despite the volumesque hair style. Also, if you ever look at the books on the shelf lined up, this one looks like one of the thinnest books of the series.

I noticed the same things - very thin book, and Stacey looks kind of sick on the cover. So does Robert for that matter!

I'm looking at the cover now. Stacey looks freaky, and her knees are uneven. Robert looks like he could be her drunk father after a bad day at the office.

Poor Robert. He looks very different on each covers he’s depicted on. He’s a great character in that he has very real teen issues…

I felt bad for him in that book also...Stacey's so sweet. I love that she pointed him toward the right help despite him being her ex-boyfriend. That's part of why I get irked when some people trash Stacey as this vain, clothed-obsessed, popularity-chasing boyfriend-hopper. Stacey is not Jessica Wakefield or Melanie Edwards.
