Thanks. That doesn't make much sense. Maybe he just takes really awful care of things. Maybe, too, it has to do with rust from the salt on the lovely northern roads That wouldn't explain the reliability part, though. Another thing that just doesn't make sense in the books - but, oh well ... I'll look for this the next time I read this one.

^The writer probably didn't know much about cars. It can actually be kind of tough to find used Toyotas in the 3 to 7 year old age range because they're so reliable. I know...I've tried! Those are the first cars to sell.

I just reread the car thing so I could add to the discussion. What it actually says is that the car was battered and the bumper was falling off. I didn't take this as anything about the car's reliability but took it that Wes had maybe gotten in a wreck (or the car had been in one, at least) and not had the car repaired so it was kind of smashed and not well taken care of in general. Maybe this was in there to show that he didn't have much money or maybe to show that he was a bad driver or maybe had no pertinence to the story whatsoever Of course, I couldn't resist rereading the Elvira subplot, which is one of my favorites. I love Buddy singing to her and Jamie bleating in her face. So cute!

When my friend and I first read this book we both had a crush on the same teacher, but we would never in a million years have told him about it! Poor Stacey thinking she had a chance. I remember her poem wasnt half bad, it was just a bad and cringe-worthy idea to show him it.

I had crushes on many teachers growing up, never ever ever EVER did I contemplate confessing it to them, though! Stacey is insane!

^Me too. I wouldn't dream of confessing. I was never that gutsy. LOL.

I wished that there was a chapter narrated by Wes, where he tells us of his reactions to Stacey's "advances?" I wanted to hear things from his point of view.

I would have liked to hear Wes's side, too. I really think he could have handled it a little better - putting a stop to it right away and making it clearer (though in a nice way) that she was a student and way too young. But I think he was trying extra hard to be "nice" and cool - a common problem with young teachers.... I knew a situation in real life where a teacher at our high school got in trouble for fooling around with some students, though he actually did something with them. This book always makes me think of that as well as making me think of the crushes I had on a few of my professors (secret in my case, I never even admitted to anyone else in the class that I so much as found the professor cute.

I agree that Wes could have handled it better. He can't have been so oblivious that he didn't realize what was going on sooner. And he should have known how carried away a 13 year old girl could get.
I had a crush on my Economics teacher my 1st year of college... oh my lord, he was so hot. He was really young, too! Even in that case I was never tempted to actually tell him about it, though!

^ I actually think Wes kind of encouraged it by asking her to stay after to help him, ect. That kind of thing could NEVER happen these days, unless there was more than one student there.

One of my professors last semester had the biggest crush on one of my friends. It was way more embarrassing and creepy than stacey's crush on wes. He actually followed us home a couple of weeks ago.
That being said, this book never fails to make me cringe. Stacey's supposed to be a smart girl; she should understand what "statuatory rape" means. Wes did encourage it though--he should definitely NOT have driven her home!!

I can relate: I had a crush on a professor once. But I never, EVER thought of telling him. Poor Stacey.

Totally agree with everyone and am glad I haven't been the only one with a secret crush. I also had a professor with a huge crush on a girl in my class. He was an idiot anyway and acted all giggly around her (but it was the only way we knew he wasn't gay ;D). The worst thing was that she sat diaganolly behind me so to spend his entire lecture staring at her, he stood right next to my desk. So annoying I was tempted to move but anyone know how it is to pick "your seat" on one of the first days and want to stick with it? I did that in almost all my classes. Starrynight, I also think Wes was almost encouraging Stacey. What was he thinking? Not quite as bad as Scott in Sea City but still, poor Stacey. Can almost see how she would get the wrong impression so frequently with these older guys.
