If I had glasses like theseI'd definitely b*tch about it. The picture's blurry, but it's one of the funniest covers I've ever seen.

Considering he's a corportate lawyer, he probably makes an excellent salary. And the Pikes were pretty frugal. I don't understand why Mallory whines about being poor in some books. Girl, your dad's a lawyer! You are not poor. You are on a budget.

I couldn't stand how someone always had to be ACTIVELY watching Claire.
She's five years old! As long as someone is around, I'm pretty sure she would be able to manage playing in her room alone.

Oh my lord, that cover made me laugh....and I'm at work. People probably think I'm crazy now. At least she looked somewhat 11 there, unlike most of her earlier covers. She started to look her age by the time she went to boarding school.

I couldn't stand how someone always had to be ACTIVELY watching Claire. I can't believe the kids expected to be paid for spending time with each other. What sort of values did these Pike parents teach their kids anyway?

That you always charge? Hey, how come Mrs. Pike doesn't charge for staying home everyday? They actually stated that they wouldn't be paying Mallory for babysitting while he was out of a job. Umm, duh.

I don't understand why they paid Mallory for every freaking moment she spent alone with her siblings. I could understand paying her if it was for a long period of time, like Mr. and Mrs. Pike were going on a day trip. But for an hour or two? Uh, no. And why did there have to be a second sitter? The triplets and Vanessa were old enough to be trusted alone while Mrs. Pike took Claire to the dentist.

I also hated how Mal hate to pay Vanessa to watch Claire for half an hour while she did her homework. WTH?

^ Personally, I think that having the kids rely so much on babysitters to take care of them stunts their maturity growth. I mean the triplets, to me, seemed kind of behind for 10 year olds, just a little.

^ hell yeah. They still played hide and seek FFS!
Strange when 11 yr olds are virtually adults with serious relationships (referring once again to Jessi and Quint)

Good point about the younger siblings always having to be watched over. As long as there are some older siblings/parents in the house I'm sure Claire could be left alone in her room to play with her barbies/lego/whatever she played with. If she asked someone to play with her, OK, but she just never seemed to have any alone time with her imagination. I know I needed that as a five year old.

I just read this one and really liked it. I could really relate to Mal's worries about money because I find myself getting panicky and upset every time my own dad mentions retiring, changing jobs, etc. There is just something about that loss of security even though he has reassured me so many times that we have plenty of money. I still freak and start trying to figure out ways to spend less and save more (often very stupid little things and feeling like I need to give everything up because it is "frivolous". So, I could relate to Mal. I can also understand why Mr. Pike reacted the way he did but posted more about this under his thread in the characters section. I felt really badly for the kids, not because they were destitute or anything but because they were worried. The point they made about homelessness also really got me thinking about some programs I've watched lately about how many working families are homeless. It's sad and I know it should make me really thankful for what I have. Anyway, the one thing that I found strange was how mean the kids were. Stoneybrook must be a really rich community because at my school, kids wouldn't have made fun of Mal and her family for being "poor". In fact, I was always made fun and hated for being "rich" (and I'm not by any means - not poor but certainly not "rich") The only thing I can think of is these girls just wanted to make fun of her for anything they could find. I loved it how the BSC supported Mal and how she stood up for herself. I could see myself telling those girls off in that same way. As for the Delaneys, they were total brats. I didn't feel sorry for them that the other kids didn't like them -they're not likable kids. Maybe they should have stopped bragging and that would have helped. But it was funny how they thought that Stacey was crazy ;D I did like this subplot. I really liked how the Pike kids worked together in this book and tried to do what they could to earn money. Claire was cute as always and I even didn't mind the triplets. I liked the description of the party Mal had at the end. It sounded like fun and like the whole book, made me wish I was part of the BSC ;D I really liked this one and can't believe that I hadn't read it before or at least for a really long time.

I liked when those girls were making fun of Mallory in the cafeteria and Jessi said "If you don't do something, I will." Jessi is a great friend to Mallory.
