I can't really remember because its been a while since I've read this one but were the kids really that horrible or were the Pikes just sensitive to it, like maybe they were just interpreting everything in terms of kids being mean to them because of their dad? I'll have to reread.

^Me too! Also when Jordan started to sing "We Are the World" and then Mr. Pike shut him up.

I don't remember all those parts, but I think I will need to read this one again soon! I remember I really liked it and thought it was funny and sweet of the kids to try to get jobs. Vanessa doing hair was out of the ordinary for me, but it was cute! Oh and go Nicky! Didn't he make more on his newspaper route than the triplets did combined?

^ Vanessa doing hair did seem unusual. Don't remember Nicky making more than the triplets but that's great. ;D What was their job again? I really liked how the BSC was so supportive in this one.

I enjoy the baby-sitting subplot of this one with the Delaney kids and their pool. As for the main plot...why didn't Mr. and Mrs. Pike just tell the kids about the severance pay right away? They could have still told them they'd have to cut back for awhile and that there'd be no "extras," but in my opinion it would have been better to let them know that there was still money coming in so they wouldn't worry about being "dessatoot"..LOL. I also think it was ridiculous that every single Pike kid was getting teased about him getting laid off. I went to school in a small town, too, but if my dad had been laid off, chances are no one would even know about it except for my close friends. No one would probably even care.

^ I really don't think every kid did tease them. I think the Pike kids were just sensitive about that and figured that's why kids weren't being nice for whatever various reasons. There were a few kids that seemed mean for that reason but from what I remember, the kids just kind of presumed that the rest of the kids were being mean because of their dad.

I guess some of them were being sensitive, but I was thinking mostly about the whole Nan/Janet/Rachel thing that Mallory was experiencing. I just don't think kids would have been that mean. But maybe in oh-so-affluent Stoneybrook, things are different!

^ I actually have experienced things like this (not necessarily about a job but about something else that shouldn't be a big deal). Some kids will just use any excuse to be mean. I've actually known kids to torment others for being sick (and looking "sick") That's what I think it was with those three. I loved how Mal stood up to them (at least that's how I remember what happened - it's been a while since I've read ;D)

I just reread this one and I wish the Delaneys hadn't moved away. I find them more interesting to read about than the Kormans. I also loved the end of the book, where the Pikes are celebrating Mr. Pike's new job. They get a cake from the bakery and it's devoured in fifteen minutes (because there's so many of them!) and then they go watch home movies. I wish my family had done stuff like that. We didn't even have a camcorder until I was in high school, so there are no videos of my sister or me when we were little kids. I like reading about the BSCers doing things with their families (without other BSC members involved). It's such a rare occurence in the books and it's always nice to read about.

We didn't have a camcorder either when I was very young. Luckily my mom was an obsessive picture-taker We have lots of albums full of memories which makes me happy. I love that part with the Pikes celebrating.

The Pikes so weren't poor if they had a camcorder in the 80s. This is a nice book for the Pike family. I liked their "us against the world" mentality.
