Why do they always have to portray Jessi as a martyr? I mean she is all - oh I got the part but I feel bad for the people who didn't. And now, oh I got screwed but I'm not going to turn her in b/c I feel back for her.

^Because she's Jessi! I think that was her "place" in BSC-land. The older girls all had their defining roles, mainly as book-sellers. That left Jessi and Mal. Ann and the Ghosties made their choices with them. Jessi=fantastic dancer, always landing a star role. Mal= a more regular/typical 11 year old who the writers rarely allowed a shining moment. Back to what you said , sorry for the tangent, it was nice of Jessi to for a moment wish everyone had gotten such an awesome role. However, we didn't need a long spiel about those feelings. The other, well, no explanation for that.

In real life, Jessi would've been that person that people walk all over!

^ true that. but i thought it was a sweet aspect of her personality. the other girls are so sure of themselves ("i know it sounds conceited, but it's true..") but jessi knows she's the least experienced dancer in her class and other girls could have gotten the role too.

^You're right, Oldhickory. Begrudgingly, "score 1" for Jessi.

^ Utterly and Completely. We also should have gotten to read about the stuff being replaced. I wonder (unless the damaged clothing and bag--wasn't there a ruined bag)? was really cheap, how Jessi was able to afford to re-buy everything? Wouldn't her parents (oh wait, silly me. Stoneybrook parents are oblivious to their kids for the most part), notice the new purchases (again)? Hilary offered to pay for the thing she damaged.

I didn't really care for this book. I had feeling will be Hilary. Who tried to hurt Jessi, sending those notes. Jessi, should told her parents or Mme Noelle. She sprain her her foot. Could be worse. For the sub-plot. It was cute they did the pet show. Every kid got a prize. Kristy, should know, that little kids will be competitive. They don't understand. You can't win everything. But, they should learn, that winning isn't everything. Mme Noelle her accent is annoying. Anytime, I read her part. I could hear in my mind. She saying "Zee her donce." Now, I got her accent, in my mind.

Americans are horrible to French LOL Ann included
I also agree that Hilary was acting like kids trying to hide they did something, especially when the rehearsal clothes went missing and she said they were in her bag all along. I've seen others do that before when lying and trying to cover up.

^ don't worry, french people can be rude too :] For the sub-plot. It was cute they did the pet show. Every kid got a prize. Kristy, should know, that little kids will be competitive. They don't understand. You can't win everything. But, they should learn, that winning isn't everything. i never thought of it that way, but you're right. i always thought giving prizes to everyone was sweet, but it actually reinforces that winning a prize was the goal, which doesn't make sense because they invited kids without pets so that everyone could just have fun.

Then maybe they shouldn't have had prizes at all!

^Totally! I realize this was "early" in the series though (as well we know) the girls don't have very good memories at all. I think once Jessi or whoever realized how competitive the kids were being and that others felt left out, the BSC should have held a meeting to change things. I don't think it was that hard a deduction to come up with the idea of awarding a personalized prize (certificate) to each pet. That along with inviting those without pets to maybe bring a stuffed animal and share a story about it, or coming up with some other creative way of "bringing a pet" to the show would have been a friendlier (and more inclusive) way of going about things. The best part about the show to me was the triplets' "horse!" Awesome idea.

Or if they were going to have a pet show, it could have been for playing games with them, like having races or showing off tricks or whatever, and then giving out a prize to everyone who showed up in the end....or just not have one at all

I'm exhausted just having plowed through this. I can't believe Mme Noelle stood for so many pranks, even an injury and didn't do something! She really could have talked to each girl individually and/or asked that assistant of hers, the one mentioned in Snowbound...Mme Dupree, to observe the class to see if she could catch what was going on. Jessi mentions that rehearsals are 2 hours. SMS gets out by 2:40. Are they trying to imply Jessi magically gets to Stamford and is ready to dance by 3pm for a true 2 hour rehearsal? Don't forget she has to listen to Mme talk a bit at the end, change, not to mention wait for her dad. I think this one is at the top with how time in Stoneybrook is!
Quick question: When did the scenery fall? My eyes must have glazed over by then already in ballet boredom. Hilary mentions it at the end.

The scenery fell during the rehearsal before she "caught" the culprit. Katie Beth pushes her out of the way so her suspects were just one at that point.
This is the only bsc book that I like the subplot better than the plot just because I love animals! I'm really bothered by how much these books talk crap about fat people! It would have been nice to see a larger bsc member, I mean they clearly wanted diversity. I know mal is supposed to be sturdy but I'm still not sure what that means!

^Thanks Wiggirl for "saving" me from having to skim harder to find it.
The Ethel Tines moment from "Winter Vacation," I think was the worst. You're right, Ann and Co. were not kind to people outside the super or even plain thin realm. I almost certain in a book I recently re-read someone else was labeled as sturdy. I know, was it Susan? I might be thinking that because of the scene where Kristy tries to physically remove her from the piano bench. Back to Mal, I never heard sturdy to (possibly) mean fat outside of these books. "Sturdy" to me means "solid" or even "strong." Whatever they (Ghosties and Ann) meant, it never came across as positive where Mal was concerned. :/
