I just reread this and was surprised to find that I actually liked the pet show subplot. The BSC members themselves were complete idiots about it -- you have to be pretty stupid to take that long to come up with the idea of letting siblings enter a pet together, or the idea of giving some sort of prize to every pet -- but I thought that the kids and the pets were cute and funny. I loved two of the triplets dressing up in a horse costume and the other one entering them in the pet show!
I was also surprised that Jessi never even considered telling her parents about all the threatening notes and sabotage, and that she didn't tell Madame Noelle because she assumed her teacher wouldn't believe her. Of course I remembered that she didn't tell them, but I thought maybe she was more conflicted about not telling her parents. Guess not. And why wouldn't Madame Noelle believe her? Jessi could show her the notes, and yeah, technically Jessi couldn't prove that she didn't write them herself, but isn't "Someone has been writing me threatening notes because they want me to give up the part of Princess Aurora" a lot less far-fetched than "Here are some threatening notes that I have written to myself because I am crazy?"

Maybe I was a really cynical little kid lol, but I always thought the triplets "pet" was so dumb and I was really annoyed they were allowed to enter it. And this is coming from someone who used to love the triplets lol.
Otherwise, I really liked this book for some reason. I'm not entirely sure why, since I wasn't a big fan of ballet back then. I do like to see the girls interacting with "outsiders," so maybe that's why. I didn't think twice when I first read it about Jessi not telling her parents or teacher what was going on. Now when I re-read, I'm appalled that she didn't go to anyone! I guess kids just don't think of those things and aren't necessarily looking for a message. It's still weird though. The flower/thorn part creeped me out.

BTW I always imagine M. Noelle to look like that ballet instructor that Bart had once on The Simpsons. ROFLMAO! Ok, I guess it isn't that funny, but a couple of weeks ago when I was reading this book, that episode of The Simpsons was on and I thought exactly the same thing. Jessi not telling her parents or Mme Noelle irritates me to the point it was hard to read. If that had happened to me when I was Jessi's age, I would have squealed as loud and quickly to the teacher as I could have. Would have been much easier with her intervention than constantly annoying her when you keep looking like an idiot when it wasn't even you, wouldn't it? If something like that had of happened at my current age, I would have found out who it was and beaten them to a bloody pulp, but that's just me. The book wasn't that bad really, but I just couldn't wait for it to be over so I could find out who it was and get off the 'mystery' genre.

For some reason, I liked this book. I really liked the part where the girls were all cramped into Charlie's car so that they could check out the suspects at the rehearsal. I agree with what everyone posted about Jessi telling her parents what was going on.

^ It was silly to cramp in Charlie's car LMAO and they ALL hid well? really now? I'm glad they did go there though, it helped towards solving the mystery

This book was meh. I am kind of indifferent about it. I do agree that the way the mystery was solved was stupid and the ending was rushed. But in a way, it's 11 year olds narrating the story so it makes sense.

I wonder what would have happened if she shared her concerns with Madame and her family....would Hilary have gotten caught or not? Would there have been a rule about keeping bags in the gym after those incidents? There would be no book.

^ it would have been really interesting to see her parents react to that kind of news. i really love the ramsey parents, and we might have actually seen some decent parenting!

It's interesting how Jessi actually got hurt from Hilary's actions and yet she didn't do anything about it. Why is everything so secret in the BSC? I am also thinking of in Stacey and the Stolen Hearts where she fails to snitch on Alan Gray about stealing the V-Day grams.

I agree that the Ramsey parents had a lot of potential. They seemed like a lot of fun (at least John, did) and caring towards their kids. Everything really is a secret in Stoneybrook, Virgoscorpio. It seems like a bigger deal is made of telling us that they (The Sitter) doesn't want to "bother, concern, etc" either her parent or that of a Charge than it would be to simply tell the adult in the first place. Annoying.

I think what Hilary did was a form of abuse and maybe Jessi wanted to control it cause she was afraid and didn't realize it, though it wasn't the way to go.

I just re-read and had the thought that Mme. Noelle should have taken Jessi aside or even stopping a dance class to demand what was going on. Surely, she must have realized all the "on stage" accidents were happening (only) to Jessi? The Ramsey parents and Aunt Cecelia, who indeed seemed to recognize something was wrong, were worse than Aunt C thought J was in I.A! Not a good message to kids (or parents) at all.
I loved the triplets horse and Max/Boo Boo. Too bad neither were mentioned again. Oh, Jessi tells us that Jackie was given a hamster when she got hers, so it was mentioned again. I don't think we ever read about it with Jackie. I don't even think he was at this pet show, was he? One other "pet" comment, Stacey tells us that she "was never allowed to have a pet." When did she ever ask for one aside from in TSB? I thought Maureen loved dogs, which was another reason I always thought it odd and disappointing that the McGills never had one.

I loved the pet contest in this one! I could totally see a bunch of kids making their pets look all cute for a contest. I love that the Pikes dyed their hamster green and that Amanda bathed her cat in perfume.
As far as the actual story, eh another boring Jessi story. Let me tell you though, I would have turned that stupid girl in. WTH Jessi! She better pay up for all that stuff she stole and ruined.

Jessi really should have told some adult what was going on. We also should have gotten to read about the stuff being replaced. I wonder (unless the damaged clothing and bag--wasn't there a ruined bag)? was really cheap, how Jessi was able to afford to re-buy everything? Wouldn't her parents (oh wait, silly me. Stoneybrook parents are oblivious to their kids for the most part), notice the new purchases (again)?
