This was always my absolute favorite when I was little. Basically, I loved the books about Sea City and this was the one that started it all.
Scott was a downright perve - he was eighteen and Stacey had just turned thirteen and he's looking at her (clad only in a bikini, mind you!) appreciatively and saying "hey beautiful" and sending her on little errands. Although in hindsight, was Toby any better?
It always annoyed me how Stacey left the $10 box of chocolates on the bench. What a waste!
Also - and I can't remember whether it was this book or Mary Anne and Too Many Boys - but how realistic is it that a brunette would be burnt to a crisp while a flaming redhead with freckles would be turning a "delicate golden brown" - dumb!
The BSC girls were always baking themselves in the sun and attempting to tan, something that would be unlikely to occur if those books were written now. Knowing the BSC, we'd be given a lecture on the potential dangers and skin cancer risk.

I also looooooved this book. I read mine so many times that the cover fell off. Mary Anne's sun problems did begin in this book, remember Claire brought her a stick of butter? There was just so much fun in this book. The trip to "Gerber Garden", mini golfing, the dates. I also agree about the chocolates, I mean dang Stacey give em away or something. Why did Stacey always seem so interested in how people were filling out their bikini's? Of course hers was filled out "very nicely" and Mary Anne's was "not filled out at ALLLL". I remember when I was younger having no idea what she meant by that. I thought she was saying hers fit, and Mary Anne's was baggy or something. Also I had no idea what pedal pushers were until I was in high school. I thought they were shoes or something.

I think this was my very first book. Wasn't it Mary Anne who left the chocolate on the bench?

Hee! No I didn't know what Stacey meant by her bikini being "filled out" either. I was a hopelessly sheltered kid. I remember reading Judy Blume books and having absolutely no idea why it was so exciting to "get IT" ... and why it was such a defining moment, going to the bathroom and seeing blood on your underpants. Huh, what?
BTW, if the cover of California Girls is an accurate portrayal, Stacey also has a long way to go before her top is filled out as well.
In regards to the chocolate, IIRC Stacey shoved them at Mary Anne and started sobbing about how "she deserved them" and then ran off bawling her eyes out. Mary Anne followed, leaving the chocolates behind. So I guess in effect you're right, Mary Anne did leave them behind. Dumb!

I loved this book! I liked how it shows how Stacey isn't as grown up as she thinks she is. I also love how it shows that Mary Anne is growing up a little more- with her liking Alex and all. I've always wondered what it woudl have been like if she had had a relationship with him. Hmm. ;D Geni

macca, if the cover of California Girls is accurate, then there's no way Mal would be described as sturdy I didn't like Stacey at all in this book. She just kept making up excuses for herself! "I'm doing really important stuff, like flirting with Scott the lifeguard and sort of watching the Pikes play in the water at the same time". Mary Anne was on the money when she huffed something like "You're getting paid just as much as I am, and *I'm* doing all the work". And yeah, this is the book where Mary Anne realises that she cannot tan.

this was one of my faves when i was little. scott was such a jerk. and i loved how his name was scott foley, like that actor on felicity, hahaha.
loved gerber garden and how maryanne got sunburnt too. the old BSC books were the best. unlike a lot of the newer ones.

I liked this book too. The Pike "Barf Bucket" cracked me up. I used to play Sea City (and BSC in general) with my Barbie dolls and labeled one of the little bucket accessories with a piece of tape to say "Margo's Barf Bucket." I also loved "Gerber Garden". I've always found the Pikes interesting.

I'm not really a huge fan of the Pikes, but I did love this book - especially when I was younger. I agree, Scott was INCREDIBLY creepy, looking back on it.
Was this the book where Mary Anne got her first bikini? For the longest time, I had absolutely no idea what "bikini" was supposed to spell. I pronounced it "binkie" and desperately wanted to be clued in as to what the big deal was.

I didn't think Mary Anne was ever allowed to wear a bikini. I remember in Mary Anne and Too Many Boys when Dawn suggested she take her metallic green string bikini (because, you know, that would look fabulous on a thirteen yr old) and Mary Anne was like, are you kidding? My dad would kill me!
Also, how weird that Stacey's mother has no issue with her flaunting her body in a bikini, but keep that bottle of Sun-Lite hidden, girl!

Ha! Maybe her mom didn't think she had anything to flaunt and Stacey didn't fill out her bikini as nicely as she claimed.
Mary Anne did have a bikini, it just wasn't as skimpy as Stacey's. It really is pretty disturbing. 13 year old bragging about filling out a skimpy bikini. Ick.

Just slightly odd to be mentioned in books that were the epitome of wholesome. If you consider what a large portion of 13 yr olds get up to these days... downright scary. In reality, a girl like Stacey would probably have gone all the way.

On Jenny Jones (talk show) a 12-year-old girl mentioned how she was a "porn star" making movies with teenagers not much older than herself. It was probably pervs with a camcorder. It was totally ridiculous.
An audience member called her a "ho." Her retort? She was a "top-notch ho." Pfft.

^ as the BSC would say... ew.
WTF is wrong with society, when there are 12 yr old girls bragging about being "top notch hos". I mean... at 12 yrs old, I didn't even have my period!
I think it was a little off, the audience labelling her a ho. Chances are, she's probably been the victim of abuse or at least has some very serious problems. I can't help hoping all these talk shows are fake, but to be honest, I'm not convinced they are.
