I always thought the things Stacey chose to bring along to keep her busy were kind of old lady-ish. Needlepoint and an Agatha Christie mystery. I'd expect her to bring some magazines or something. For the longest time, I had absolutely no idea what "bikini" was supposed to spell. I pronounced it "binkie" and desperately wanted to be clued in as to what the big deal was. Hehe!

I wondered about her choices of stuff to bring, too, booboo. It seemed like another example of how the books frequently used stuff like Agatha Christie books that the writers or someone their age would have liked. I would have expected someone like Stacey to take Seventeen or some other mag like that.

I think the cover picture of Scott looked like it belonged on a Harlequin romance novel instead of a BSC book.

I would have expected someone like Stacey to take Seventeen or some other mag like that. That kind of stuff always made me wonder too. I remember quite a few times a BSC member would mention a book they were reading, and it was a book I hadn't read or heard of until I was in high school.

Or she could have read something a bit younger for her, like a teen book, magazines or if she was into reading literature early, something like Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre. I thought the needlepoint thing was a bit odd for someone like Stacey though. Ann M Martin sometimes forgot that she wasn't writing about herself but a 13 YEAR OLD (hmm probably why the BSC are such mini-adults ).

Reread this one while on vacation and still love it. Still have the same thougths, too, that Scott kind of led Stacey on. I guess that was just how he talked - calling her "babe" and stuff but I can almost see how she would think that he liked her (a lot of wishful thinking too The Pikes were cute as always. Claire bringing butter for MA's sunburn still makes me laugh. And I love the scenes on the boardwalk. I probably have more thoughts but am totally jet lagged right now

Ha! Maybe her mom didn't think she had anything to flaunt and Stacey didn't fill out her bikini as nicely as she claimed. Mary Anne did have a bikini, it just wasn't as skimpy as Stacey's. It really is pretty disturbing. 13 year old bragging about filling out a skimpy bikini. Ick. Am I the one that doesn't think it's that bad? I was quite big chested when I was thirteen and pround of it. I wore lots of tight shirts. I know thriteen year old girls shouldn't be having sex but it's not like they don't think about it. Or at least my friends and I did all the time. We were scared by the idea of actually doing it but thought about the idea a lot.

I think it's probably fairly common for a 13 year old girl like Stacey to be proud of her ability to "fill out" her bikini. But on the other hand you'd have girls like Kristy who would probably be embarrassed of their large chests (well Kristy didn't have a large chest, but you know what I'm saying) and try to hide behind baggy t-shirts. I can't say I have any personal experience with this, though. I still have trouble filling out my swimsuits. lol.

I developed early unfortunately, right when I turned 13, and instead of being excited, I was really embarrassed and tried to hide my chest. Even though I knew it wasn't true, I felt like the only 13 year old girl with a chest.

I was ten when I started developing. I hated it. LOL.

^ I still haven't developed ;D (but don't really care). Stacey does seem like the type to be proud of this - I don't think it's a very good thing for the books to promote "flaunting" development but it is in keeping with Stacey's character, I guess.

I don't know if the books were promoting it, of itself; as I recall, it was kind of a throwaway comment. I think it's just an observation AMM figured a thirteen-year-old girl would make, and she was probably right. It's not as though the entire book focused on how full the bikini tops of Sea City were, a la Margaret Simon.

Agreed. The BSC talking about filling out their tops is something to snark on, but it's a realistic inclusion in a series about 13 year olds...

^ Definitely agree. And I wasn't saying that the book was promoting it - agree with lila that it just was mentioned and is common. Was just making the comment that A book shouldn't promote it.
