I always had the same feelings about Scott too. The first time I read it I thought he was a major creep. No matter how many times I read this book it always remains one of my favorites.

The chest thing is definitely something that gets noticed at 13. I was flat like Kristy and MA and heard about it both from girls who "filled out" their tops like Stacey, and from boys. So I'm not surprised at all that Stacey would be thinking that way about another girl, and at least she had the decency not to comment on MA's flatness. I wasn't surprised at her crush on a 17 y/o though. Through most of the books, Stacey sounds like she is trying to be more 17 than 13.

I just bought this one at a thrift store today (I read it years ago, but forgot some of the plot) -- and does anyone remember the part where Karen & Andrew "wash" Watson's old car and use STEEL WOOL instead of sponges? Oh lord, they took the paint right off and they didn't get punished! I was very, very shocked.........but then again, Karen never gets punished.

well, it was an old junker they did it to, and they had permission to wash the car. i mean, karen was only like six. she couldn't really know that would happen.

^ Exactly. She was trying to do something good and made a mistake. I think it was more Kristy's fault for leaving them unsupervised. I love this book. The Pike kids are so cute and I always enjoy reading about Sea City ;D

^ But I guess Kristy never imagined that Karen and Andrew would decide to use steelwool. Didn't she have to go inside because Louie was bleeding or something?

The old car gets painted, or Watson talks about painting it, doesn't he?

^ He wanted to paint it purple, I think ;D Guess that would go with the Pink Clinker ;D

Yeah, I thought it was unfair of them to blame Kristy. Watson actually said "I know you had an emergency, but [it was still your fault]." It really wasn't Karen's fault either - that was reasonable logic for a kid that age.

I agree with mckay. It's just an unfortunate accident. No one was really to blame imo.

^ Agree. It probably wasn't a good idea for Kristy to leave the kids alone but Watson really just pointed that out (from what I remember)

Well, Watson wasn't really mad anyway. (Does he ever get angry?) I wonder if they ever did paint that car purple? ;D

^ I always wondered that too ;D I actually know someone with a purple car but it's more of a plum than a lilac or bright purple, which is what I picture Watson painting his. Speaking of cars in this book, I always thought it made more sense for the Pikes to have 2 station wagons than one of those giant vans that held everyone. Some of my 3rd cousins had 8 kids in their family (and only 1 set of twins, no other multiples ;D) and had one of those big vans but it caused problems when one parent had that vehicle and the other needed to take more kids than the car would hold.

This was my favorite book when I was little.
I always wanted to go to Sea City! I always pictured it like Coney Island, but more clean.
