aln1982, I hate the subplot in Memory Garden as well! I know I take a lot of things in the BSC universe more seriously than I should, but my reaction to Dawn and her Palo City friends getting mad at Mr. Cruickshank because a sitting charge got hurt while trespassing on his property probably means I am certifiably insane. Oh, well.

^ So glad for the agreement on Memory Garden. I've ranted enough about that subplot on that thread, though, so I guess I'm certifiably insane with you, Lila ;D As for this book, I forgot to mention that I felt for Karen and Andrew, too, with watching Louie in his last days. Even though they didn't know him for long, it was still sad for them and scary to see a beloved pet practically dying right in front of you. Another thing is I just can't see Shannon the person giving them Shannon the dog as being enough to make the way she acted okay. I just really did not like her in this one!

I think I felt most bad for David Michael in this book. Louie was his best friend and that has to be so hard knowing that your best friend is going to die. I felt for a kid his age he was pretty strong.
I can't read this book without having a tissue nearby.

Louie and David Michael spent the last night sleeping together right? Like downstairs on the floor or something? DM was probably the saddest thing about this book. Louie was there all his life and they definitely had a bond that he didn't have with anyone else in his family. Poor guy I don't even normally like DM but I'm getting all sad just thinking about this! DM has always kind of seemed like the blacksheep of the Thomas family to me, and I think he really clung to Louie because of that.

^ Agree. Usually I don't like DM or dogs but this was really sad and I thought the same thing about his relationship with Louie. Like Kristy said in one of the books, he needed somebody (or something). I can relate to this as I have done it wih horses. Also understand how he so quickly took to Shannon (dog) as I've done this, too. It's not really "replacing" an old pet as much as grasping on to something new to almost "distract" yourself. Doesn't make complete sense but I understand it.

I was like that when my cat died - I wanted another one pretty much right away because everything seemed so empty with just one cat in the house. I don't think I could ever get another horse, though. Alf was to me what Pax was to Mallory the most perfect in the world. I felt so bad for DM in this book. Poor kid. I was 20 when I first lost a pet that wasn't a fish and I was wrecked. I can't imagine being 7 and having to go through it.

I have to admit, all these years later, whenever I hear the song "Brother Louie" (the one they mention in the first chapter or so), I think of this book.

^Me, too. ("Louie, Louie, Louie, Louieeee...") I also feel bad whenever I read about Louie's death; I have two dogs and can't imagine losing them even though one of them is 9 and one is 16 so I know at least my 16-year-old's time will be soon. Speaking of age -- correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Louie die of old age? Was he a puppy when they got him, and was that around the same time David M was born, and if so, is SEVEN that old for a dog?! Like I said, mine are 9 and 16 and for now seem to be in perfect health ... I don't even think of my 9 year old as an old dog. But I've always had small dogs (around 10-15 pounds) and the lifespan could be different for larger dogs, I'm honestly not sure.

^7 would be old for a REALLY big dog, like a Great Dane, but for a collie? Not so much.

Was that all he was? I have no idea about dog age but assumed Louie was older. My aunt's golden lab lived to like 12, which I thought was pretty typical for dogs. (All of my dogs - outside and "barn" dogs - haven't made it past the age of about 3 because they were hit or ran away or had to be given away.) I guess that Louie was only 7, though, if he was a puppy when DM was born. Maybe another case of strange BSC ages ;D

The Louie's age thing bugged me too. They mentioned several times that Louie was a puppy when DM was born...so that would make him around 7....that's really not that old hmph. that drove me nuts Lol

I mean, GEEZ, Ann, he was only roughly 49! Was she reaching for drama? I loved Louie!

Remember what they fed Elvira (as Dawn mentioned)? Maybe they fed Louie the same way and his system gave out early because of it?
