^ And poor Becca... she was the one who said that Squirt should be unbuckled, she must have felt so guilty.

I just got this book, and while I liked how realistic everyone's actions were in this book in terms of Squirt's accident - first blaming themselves, then each other - I got really annoyed with "Daddy" saying that Aunt Cecelia was living as a "guest" in their house. I don't tink a "guest" would agree to be a live-in nanny and housekeeper! Yeah, that bit was unfortunate, because Daddy had been otherwise awesome in this book.

^ Daddy probably shouldn't have said that since she does do a lot for the family (though I'm not sure what the room and board arrangements are). I can see why he did, though, speaking in anger and frustration. She was being pretty tyrannical from what I remember and bossing him around. And he was understandably upset about Squirt, not that being upset is an excuse to take it out on other people, but it is human nature.... I actually don't remember feeling too badly for Aunt C in this book because any sympathy I would have felt was erased by her bossiness. But I will have to see what I think when I reread at Christmastime. I do remember feeling really terrible for Becca, Jessi too. I really like this book, for some reason. It seems very "realistic" to me with the family tension, maybe because of the less than perfect behavior one everyone's part. Looking forward to rereading it now. ;D

I re read this book and I liked it more the second time around. I liked how all the family reactions to Squirt's accident were normally how people would react.
I also liked learning more about Kwanzaa in this book, I honestly knew of it, but didn't know anything about it.

I learned what Hoppin' John was because of this book, which was cool because we actually discussed it in one of my classes a couple of months ago...(I guess should be posted in the "What I learned from the BSC" thread )

One of my favorite things about this book is everything I learned about Kwanzaa. No one can say the BSC isn't educational. ;D

I also liked Daddy in this book and learned what Kwanzaa was. Never considered it a holiday that everyone could celebrate but after I read this book, I found it something fun to do after Christmas and had my family start observing some of the "days". Didn't much care about the plot other than the "educational" aspect of it but still read it every Christmas. That's so cool I'm not Jewish (as far as I know) but soon after reading "Karen's Wish" my aunt got a dreidel and we would play on Christmas Eve. I think I had to guess what was what since they never showed the Hebrew Written out, but I knew what "nun, gimmel, hey, and shin" (I'm sure I spelled most of those wrong) meant. We would play for acorns. This past year my husband and I invited his family over the day before Xmas eve and dreidel was one of the activities we did. We played for chocolate coins though.

Aunt Cecilia is only 50? She acts like she's 87. Lol, I always thought that she was older than 50 too while reading this (and the other Jessi books that mention her). I always pictured Aunt Ceceila as this cranky old lady wearing a floral moo-moo (or whatever you call it lol) and black pumps for shoes. Anyway, this is probably the only Jessi book that I like to read. I liked learning about Kwanzaa and how it can be for everyone. I also liked Jessi's relatives coming to visit at the end . I felt bad for Squirt though; I'm glad he was okay .

I can see why he did, though, speaking in anger and frustration. Yeah, I totally get that he was really upset, but I wish he'd apologized at some point, just because it was a really mean thing to say, and he usually seems like a really nice guy.

^ Agree about him really being a nice guy but he probably didn't see the need to apologize because he either didn't even realize what he said or did believe he was right. Since I don't know the whole room and board situation, I'm not sure exactly if he was totally wrong (also since I haven't read this one for a while) ;D I love learning about different holidays from the BSC books. ;D

^ One of my local radio stations played Christmas music on the 31st as their "Halloween costume." When I woke up that day to "Deck the Halls," I was pretty confused for a couple of minutes! I also liked learning more about Kwanzaa. It gets the once-over in public schools around here, but none of what we learned about it in school stuck with me. I never really thought of it as something anyone can celebrate, but I guess it is. Some of the "themes" are pretty universal, no matter what race/religion/culture you're from. That's nice to think about.

I had no idea what Kwanzaa was before reading this book, so yeah, I agree, the BSC is very educational!

Lol, one of my local radio stations started their 24/7 playing of Christmas songs on Saturday (The station is called The Lite so they call it "The Holiday Lite"). This means that from now until Christmas, this station is going to play nothing but Christmas music. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas music but they started playing it waaay too early. They used to start playing Christmas music after Thanksgiving but then they started earlier and earlier until they had no choice but to start playing the songs at the beginning of the month.
